Rooster fight and hurt eye, what can we do for the eye?

Conroe, TX

Our neighbors rooster was out and visited our yard. One of our roosters was in the yard and a rooster fight was in full swing when my son realized the rooster was here. The odd thing is they are actually brothers because the neighbors rooster is one we gave him from our hatch last year. Anyway, our spoiled rotten rooster that was in the fight got his eye hurt. He just sits and closes it and sort of tucks his head in. We can find any other injuries other than the usual comb and wattle damage but he just isn't acting normal. The eye looks a bit red. Does anyone have any suggestions of what we might be able to put on his eye or do for it that will ease the pain. We are hoping he won't loose his sight in that eye. He is a sweetheart of a rooster and comes running when we come home. My son carries him around all the time he is so tame.

i would clean it out first, in case he just got stuff in it. even if it is injured, you want it clean. so try some "natural tears" OTC at the pharmacy... then you might have to rig a way to cover it for a while.... some sort of small cap you could tape or bandage on.... so sorry about your roo...

Thanks! He is such a spoiled ol boy.
Is it normal for them to just sit with their head tucked down when they are hurt? We can't find any other injuries but he will pull his neck in to his shoulders and sit with his eyes closed.

yes, that seems normal. they are so easily traumatized, and any pain seems too much for them at first. let him rest.

Glad to say he seems to be doing much better. He keeps the eye open now. At first he closed it and would open only the other eye. Had me worried I was afraid he might loose it. But this afternoon he is acting normal and has his eye open again. My kids would be devastated if anything happened to him. This is a picture of his injuries but this is his good eye. The injured eye was on the other side.

whew! looks like he will recover. :-)

Yep, he didn't look all that bad but acted like he was not doing well. His other eye has a bit of knot on the eyelid and is still a bit red looking on the eye but at least he has it open now.

musta hurt his pride too. after all, his own BROTHER whooped him!

No kidding. You know what's really funny. Before we gave the other rooster to the neighbor my kids had already named him Feathers. When our hurt one, (named Splits.....another story behind that name) was in the house I accidentally called him Feathers twice and both times he growled at me. Literally growled. It was too funny.

Well, it just goes to show you he knows his name, and DON'T YOU FORGET IT!!!
