Moss as Mulch?

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 9a)

I have posted all over and no one seems to know the answer. I'm talking about the gray, red bug infested, moss that hangs from the trees here in the south east. Spanish moss is what some call it I think.

I have a ton of it. I had a few trees removed (oaks) that were covered in this moss. So I kept it. I've gotten it into a nice big pile. Now, I've started several new gardens this year and I was thinking of using it as a ground cover... like mulch... to keep moisture in the ground. I realize it will not root and such... that's not what I want. I want it to just act like mulch and keep the moisture in the ground. But being an "air" plant there was some question about it work the opposite.

Can anyone tell me if this moss will do that? Or has anyone tried it?

Thanks,

makshi,

Thanks a bunch for the link... that pretty much answers my question. It also provided me with some possible other uses.
