I bought a total of 32 chicks + 3 free ones from MMH a month ago.
I now have 25 (we are suspecting that AE virus so much talked about.
I did not get them tested. The ones alive now seem to be quite healthy,
with the exception of a few that are smaller than they should be).
OK - here's the game. Which is this? Black Australorp?
Anyone want to help figure out which is which?
Here's a picture with three. I'm 95% sure the one on the lower left
is the golden wyandotte.
Options:
Cuckoo Maran
Silver Gray Dorking
Lakenvelders
Egyptian Fayoumis
Araucana
I never raised any of them but cuckoos marans and in the "oops here it is" pic with three chicket it the one on biggest one in the pic (on the roost on the right) that is as far as I know a cuckoo marans pullet.
I agree with LoraK, the middle one in the last picture looks just like my cuckoo marans. She is not the brightest bird--yesterday when the whole group came charging me to get corn, she ran straight into a flower pot and bounced off. And she still can't find her way into the coop at night, even with the Delaware trying to guide her in by standing at the door and peeping at her. But I really love her anyway. Those are wonderful chicks, Tammy. Could the white one be a Lakenvelder?
Catscan, could that chick be blind?
Hi Granny, I've worried about that myself. I think she can see--but maybe not as well as normal. Or maybe she is blind in one eye. She does peck at food and eats well free range--which seems to be the acid test. But when I hold food out it front of her she reacts so slowly that the other chicks always jump in and get it first. She is just a strange little bird. Slow to react to everything. The Delaware seems to look out for her-- yesterday when she couldn't find her way into the coop, the Delaware left all the other pullets that had settled down for the night, and stood in the door calling and calling to the Marans. It was quite moving. LIttle Mamma.
You know, she might be (how do they call it now) developmently disabled? Used to be called retarded? ☼
#1 looks like 2 black australorp.
#2 BO
#3&4 dont know
#5 might be the ameraucana/EE Araucana are rumpless
#6 on the perch is for sure a GLW and your cuckoo Marans and the one in the back looks like a EE to me.
The EE/ameraucana is most likely going to have green or blackish legs.
the pics idk must be the other breeds because i would not recognize the breeds i dont have.
Sorry you lost some.......those are nice looking birds you have left. They say the ones that survive will be immune.
Thanks Lora & Catscan. That's a good start! Do you
think I got the first two right?
Catscan - I got the cuckoo marans for the dark brown eggs.
Do you have just the one? I'll let you know if mine is similarly
challenged as yours. LOL
Tam
Granny--I think your diagnosis is right. I think she is what was once called "simple". I like her very much--almost because she is so different. I remember once telling a friend how funny intelligence is--you can tell the "smart" chick from all the rest--even though no one thinks chickens are "smart". But within their own sphere there are definite differences and some chickens are smart and some not so much:-)
Tammy--I'm changing my vote for the third chick--I'm thinking Fayoumi--because the head is white. You have a wonderful selection. And it is good to know you don't have to worry about AE again with this group. I would love to hear about your Marans personality. I read they don't like to be handled much--but she doesn't seem harder to handle than the RIR. They are my own personal velociraptors!

The odds are better with your first try on that third pic Catscan.
There were two that looked very similar and one died. I bought
3 Lakenvelders and 1 Egyptian Fayoumi.
Thank you on the compliment of selection. I'm raising some of
these for a friend. She ordered 17 and I ordered 15. It looks like
my bantums did pretty well - I think they all made it.
Black frizzled cochin (2 + 1 free)
Red frizzled cochin (1)
Blue silkie (1) -> I may have lost this one. Not sure yet.
Tam
Hi Tam, I changed my vote, because of the white head--the pictures show the Fayoumi with a white head and darker body--darker in the female than the male, which looks a little like a Deleware in coloring. I think the distinctive feature of the Lakenvelder is the black head and tail especially in the roosters. Does the chick have more dark feathers coming in on its head? It is hard to tell in the picture. If it does, I'll return to my Lakenvelder vote. If I am right, what do I win?:o)
I've never really seen a cochin, except in pictures--what are they like? I know I would love a silkie--I hope you didn't lose your blue.
Tammy you have to tell me how the egyptian is. I almost ordered one with my ordered. I pretty much ordered one of everything I ordered for everyone else. I am going to have a even more colorful yard!
Lakenvenders will be a white chicken with a black head and tail
Sigh. You mean I'm going to have to be patient and wait for these babies to grow
up? LOL I guess I'll have to wait then.
Lora - the fayoumi is one my friend ordered. She thought such an ancient breed
would be a good survivor. We'll let you know how she does (assuming she's one
of the survivors).
