What type of soil for Ornamental Oregano 'Kent Beauty'?

Hammond, LA(Zone 8b)

I ordered one from Logees. I had one a few years ago and it did poorly mainly because of the wet soil. I am planning on putting this one in a container so that I can regulate the water better.

Should I use regular potting mix, or 1/2 potting mix and 1/2 perlite? Vermiculite?

If anyone has any suggestions or experience with this plant I would appreciate it very much.

Jenn ~ I have grown this each summer in a pot and used regular potting soil. Unless I miss my guess, mine bites the dust every summer due to heat not soil/water. I love it and will have a new one each summer. Very pretty blooms and fragrant foliage. Good luck!

I just would think that these are sort of mediteranean type herbs- and shouldn't mind the heat... Mine lives in a pot with regular potting soil mixed with a bit of gravel in the top 2-3 inches... It does rather poorly over the winter in the greenhouse- Too damp and cool, I think .. But does well outdoors in the summer. I feel I don't treat it exactly right as well- maybe someone can tell us all what to do!
Jennifer- perhaps you could ask someone from Logee's - they have always seemed helpful to me...

Sjms ~ you are probably correct. Southern Herb Growing says "Give this plant full sun, less than average moisture and excellent drainage. It is not fussy about soil but don't plant it in clay." It also stated "It does not do at all well in wet, humid conditions..." The humidity level may be why it craters for me. Seems to fail during the June rains even tho I have it potted and sheltered.

pretty picture though! think you need to try better draining soil? clay pots help soil not stay wet too..

Well this is going to be my #1 mission this year.

I had this in a container a few years ago planted in potting mix. It was beautiful!
