when to uncover?

I've got a fig tree that was just planted last summer (a transplant from grandparents house) and we pruned down in the fall, and covered with straw and a cone. I'm wondering when I can uncover? I'm just itching for spring! We're in zone 5a. The last frost date is I think in beginning of May but wasn't sure if they're hearty enough for a little frost? we're still getting down in the upper 20's occasionally at night. I fear I should wait a few more weeks, but it's just sooooo hard

One good guideline is to uncover when the early trees are blooming (e.g. Bradford pears, apricots). Another is to uncover when the 10-day forecast shows no temps below 25F. In my climate I unwrapped last weekend.
