Height of trellis for melons?

Macon, GA(Zone 8a)

Greetings, all --

This year, for the first time, I'm planning to grow several small fruiting melons (1-5 lbs) vertically. Not having grown melons in the past, I can't figure out how tall a trellis I need.

Can someone help me out? Is a five-foot trellis too short? Seven feet?

Thanks in advance,

Liane

Mine are around 6 ft tall, if that's any help. I trellis, cukes, small watermelons and some cantalope. I use old knee highs or pantyhose to "sling" the melons. Just make sure you have a sturdy system set up. Those get heavier than they look and especially if you have several.

What varieties are you growing? This information could be very helpful.

Well, Burpee's Burpless Cukes, Gurney's Sugar Baby Watermelon, and an NOID Heirloom type that is suppose to be a small one. For loupes, I'm trying Gurney's Alaska Hybrid Melon which is suppose to be an early one. And Burpee's Cantaloupe Breakfast Longkeeper. I also have several Heirloom varieties I want to try. I have the room to segregate them out, so am going to see what happens. :)

Greetings, all --

Thanks for the responses.

doccat5: It's great to hear that 6 foot trellises are working well for you -- I was hoping that 6 feet would be ok!

feldon30: I haven't made my final decision as to which varieties I'll be growing -- I have a few weeks to go still before it's an issue. I'll be choosing from:

Commercial Hybrids:

Athena 4 lbs
Honey Orange 3 lbs
Passport 5-6 lbs
Savor 2 lbs
Summer Dream 2.5-4 lbs

Heirloom:

Eden's Gem 2-3 lbs
Noir de Carmes up to 3 lbs
Tigger small

I'll also be growing Burpee's Early Hybrid Crenshaw (14 lbs) and Minnesota Midget, but I won't trellis either.

Here's another question -- how close together do I space trellis melons? Or for that matter, cucumbers?

Thanks,

Liane
