I have a water garden, about 4x12?, hubby knows and he isn't here right now. The ice on the top has all melted, and there is a ton of the string algea in it. Now, to put the pump together,(we sink it to the bottom of the pond for the winter) I need to get 'IN' the pond, brrrrrrr. I usually do this after the water warms but I have never had this much algea as soon as the ice is off. I know I need to run the pump and filter when I kill the algea so it gets sucked out, is there any product that will kill it off and make it sink to the bottom so that it doesn't interfere with the breathing of the fish?
Thank you,
Kathy
I need some help with algea please
You can use hydrogen peroxide for string algea, works very nicely and is not harmful to your fish - I use the store stuff 3% 16oz(1pt) / 1000gallons of water. It works great!
Hope that helps,
DC
Thank you. Will the dead algae float or sink?
Kathy
Depends on the circulation in your pond. Floating is better. You want that stuff filtered out, not collecting on the bottom. Rotting on the bottom it can become a breeding ground for some bad bacteria. Suspended algae doesn't bother fish a bit. Just the owners cause they can't see the fish. Dont know where Warren OH is but I've got a lot of suspended green soup algae in my pond in Toledo OH, but no string algae. Not had enough sun and warmth to grow it. There is no possibility of putting the pump in. Right now were are getting a serious snowfall.
thank you, its pouring here,,,,,,,,,,,,ugh
Gus, there is a product I use called Algea fix, Just used my fist application and all the algea is gone. You can get it at your local pond supply. Also I add a bundle of barley straw to the pond as soon as the ice is gone and that keeps the algae down for the summer , I just change the bundle every 2 months, there is a chemical reaction the barley causes that the algea doesn't like.Do a search online for barley straw and you can find the info on it.
Good luck
Ann
I use barley straw liquid and Alga fix. I just cant get into the pond yet to set up the pump and filter, tooo coooold. So I wanted a product that would kill the algae and make is sink, until I can get in to set stuff up. I know the dead algea will muck up the water and make breathing difficult for the fish. I will just wait then.
Thank you, Kathy
Instead of a toilet bowl brush, I use a spaghetti fork taped onto an old handle. I have
no problem getting string algae off of it. I can't imagine trying to get the algae out of the bristles.
The one thing you don't want is a lot of dead algae rotting on the pond bottom..Floating algae is harmless to fish unless in the case of string algae, if it gets really thick, the fish might get tangled in it if they are small. .Floating algae does not interfear with gill function (breathing) . Keep dead algae floating so that the filters trap it and remove it. Try this web site. It has a lot of good info. I've never bought anything from them but the information is accurate.
