I was wondering if any of you give your baby chicks freshly picked (w/o pesticides of course) weeds from your yard? My adult hens always live that green treat, but I hadn't ever given any to the babies. Today, as I pulled a big fresh dandelion green out of the yard, I decided to set it in with the chicks...and how cute they were scratching in it and tugging it a part. I figured it had to be ok, right??
fresh weeds anyone?
Probably. I have given my chicks grass when they were young and it never hurt them, so I would think a dandelion would be okay.
And, dandelion greens are edible for humans too.

I gave mine unsprayed dandelions when they were about 2 1/2 weeks old. They loved them! I figured by then they would be out and about with their Mom anyway--eating whatever they came across.
That's kinda what I was thinking...if these babies had a mother hen to follow around, they'd be scratchin up a storm in the weeds, lol. So cute to see the little "fluffy golf balls with legs" (my son called them that when he was little) scratching around in the greens.
