Eremurus or foxtail lilies

McLean, VA(Zone 6b)

I'm confused. Can these be planted in the spring for spring/summer growth or should they only be planted in the fall? Also do they reach their full height the first year or will they get taller the following year?

It seems to me it is offered only in fall catalogues.( but my memory could certainly be defective!)
In my zone they are not reliably hardy and it took several years before they flowered and then they got higher each year- highest was only about 4 feet.. Last year they did not bloom at all.- they are popping up now and I hope they will flower again this year.

penne-you can try to plant them now and see?? I know that I have seen a lot of stuff that says that you can plant very early spring for summer flowering...

Fairy,

You want me to do your dirty work for you!

Seriously, I have already expanded the beds for this year, and I think that I still have too many plants. I am going to consider this for next year though.

They start to grow in late winter and spring, gathering their strength before they produce their towering flower spikes in summer. They should be planted in the Autumn after flowering........
