I know that its a different kind, but it looks like the slash pines here in Florida (Zone 10a)

Yes it does look like slash pine. That is one of the reasons why I went to have a closer look at it. The needles are all at least 8" long. I did post incorrectly that it had two needles but I'm going to post a picture of the three needles in a bundle.

This is a cross of Pinus taeda (Loblolly pine) and Pinus palustris (Longleaf pine)... I wonder if it occurs in nature? Some other pines hybridize freely in the wild.

Pinus taeda is native and the same for P.palustris. However P. palustris grows more in sandy areas where P. taeda grows faster and in more open areas such a fields and around highway cuts. They could cross but cultivars have to be propagated by us because their seeds do not produce the same plant as the parent. I love nature. Maybe this is how this cross came about.
