Schultz no longer making Schultz Soil Conditioner?

Fowlerville, MI(Zone 5b)

Al, thanks again for your help the other night. I'd be lost without it. I've been shopping today for the ingredients needed to make (my own) potting soil, and can't wait to get started. :-D I'll post a picture once I get my Mimosa tree potted and the leaves come out. ~~ Regardless of the forum, Dave's Garden folks are the best!

Using Dyna-Gro's website to find distributors, I ended up calling all over Michigan to try to find their Foliage-Pro 9-3-6 and no one had it. I ended up buying it off of ebay. (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&Item=250139848042&Category=20540&_trksid=p3907.m29)

Also, just so you all know, when I went to an ACO Hardware store today to buy my bag of Schultz soil conditioner, the manager told me that Schultz is no longer making their granite soil conditioner. He speculated that the reason Schultz discontinued their production of the granite soil conditioner was that maybe it was too expensive to make. He said that ACO Hardware bought up what was left of Schultz's soil conditioner inventory, and that once it's all gone, it's gone for good. Al, if this is true, what is the next best product to use instead of Schultz soil conditioner (granite), and where can we find it?

Hope this helps... If this info is inaccurate, please let me know.

You probably got some bad info from your hardware guy, and, I think you misunderstood our conversation. ;o) Schultz does still package the soil conditioner and it is just Turface MVP in Schultz's bags. I saw large, fresh stacks of the 25 lb bags at our local Acco (you didn't go to Ace Hdwe, did you?) just last week, newly arrived for spring.

The granite (GraniGrit) is an entirely different product & is the the stuff we talked about going to the feed stores for. Expect to pay about $10 for the soil conditioner and around $8 for the grit. The grit comes in 50 lb bags, so eat your Wheaties for breakfast. If you get the 'starter/chicken' size, you can offer it to your birds.

I bought the fertilizer online, not even bothering to try to find it by calling around. It seems that retailers never carry the best stuff! ;o)

I'll be watching for the pics & reports on your success! All the best, G.

Al, I told you I was "green" when it came to all this... :) I double checked and I DID buy the right stuff - and my notes from the other night are correct. For some reason, when I went to type it out here on this blog got "granite" stuck in my head...

I bought my Schultz Soil Conditioner at the only ACO Hardware store we have. I called all the other ACE stores close by and, of course, none of them had it. So... It was at an ACO store that I was told that Schultz was no longer making their soil conditioner. BUT.... As Paul Harvey would say, now for the rest of the story…..

I called the manufacturer of Schultz Soil Conditioner (SSC) to see if they indeed discontinued making SSC and they said that they had NOT discontinued making it. So, I then called my ACO store and asked for the manager (Steve), who ended up not being the same man I talked to when I was in the store buying my SSC. I told Steve the info I was told my one of his employees, Steve then called his buyer and then called me back. Here's the (real) scoop: ACO purchased their stock of SSC last year but it did not sell as well as they expected so they had a lot of SSC left over in their warehouse. So this year, they did not purchase any new stock of SSC and will just sell what is left in their inventory from last year. Once that is gone, they will probably buy more SSC, but not at the quantity they purchased last year. …And now you have the rest of the story.

Whew! I feel better…
Thanks again Al!
