Seed Block Maker

Waxahachie, TX(Zone 8a)

Has anyone used one of these? You can used your own soil/planting medium to make little blocks or pods for starting seeds. I was thinking of getting one for next year's sowing. http://www.johnnyseeds.com/catalog/product.aspx?scommand=search&search=seed%2bblocks&item=9527

How would it hold together when you water?

That's a good question, Anne! I was wondering the same thing. My wife saw these being used on Martha Stewart, so I'll ask her if they addressed that issue.

It seems to me that watering would undo the entire thing.

broncbuster, click on your link. On the lower right hand side under more product information, you'll find a link to a PDF file. It states that you need to use a mix high in fiber so it acts as a binder.

I have one of these that I used for several years. I made the blocks, then set them close together in flat-bottomed dishes with sides. They held the shape well, and germination rates were good. I stopped using it though because the seedling roots often extended into adjoining blocks and got broken at setting-out time. Strips of newspaper between rows might have alleviated the problem. I've gone to newspaper pots. Takes a little longer but seedlings can be set out without any disturbance to the roots. Making the pots ahead is a good wintertime activity. Yuska

Yuska, do you still have your block maker?

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

Yes, I do, but I stored it in the garage and it has some rust spots.

Waxahachie, TX(Zone 8a)

Rust spots don't bother me. How much would you take for it?

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

I'll d-mail you.

Oh goody!
