Brugs (Angel Trumpet) in the midlands of SC?

Lexington, SC(Zone 8a)

Anyone know a good location to purchase Brugs here in central South Carolina? We'd love to add these to our garden as annuals, but I've not see anyone carrying them (oddly enough). My parents say they are typically called Angel Trumpet around here. I'm sure most of you who love tropicals have a few of them.

Thanks,
-John

i know wingards nursery has a few. i bought a white one there, and they have pinkish and yellow ones. when i was there in the fall they did, at least.... cant be 100% sure they do now tho. they can be grown as perennils in Lexington

Lexington, SC(Zone 8a)

They must be out of them at the moment, we stopped by twice last weekend. I'll check back with them this or next weekend and see if they plan to get them back in. Thanks :)

no problem. They have a big one in the ground as a perennial

Has Riverbanks had their sale yet? I know they had some listed in the brochure.

If I worked across the street from the Farmers Market I would be over there every day at lunch hour. Some of the vendors have to be carrying brugs.

Lexington, SC(Zone 8a)

I didn't even think of looking over there (though we did try and stop by Rebecca's Garden there one day). I'll see if I can talk to the wife into walking or driving over one day. How on earth did you remember I worked across the street? LOL

;-))))))

John - we carry them at work although they are dormant right now - I also have numerous starts from seeds I started this winter for the Datura's (trumpet goes up instead of down) you are welcome to some if you like - I have lilac LeFleur, Metal and Purple queen...are you looking for a particular color or type? I have several of the below in my yard - you are most welcome to one, I then have a white one and the std. orange one you see everywhere it seems LOL

Thanks. I picked up two from my folks this weekend (didn't even know they had them), so I'm going to see what happens with those to start. We'll likely want to use several more in the backyard at some point. When do these guys usually bloom? I'm guessing later in the summer?

I actually thought the white was the most common... I guess that shows how much I've been paying attention to them, LOL.

Sumter, SC(Zone 8a)

John you surely could be right about the white...it's just newberry you see alot of the orange...all that probably means is that is all that someone carried at one time LOL The pics I took of my brugs was from last June...

Bluffton, SC(Zone 9a)

i think yellow is the most common, and TRUE orange the least

I'm curious to see what colors these I brought home are now. Guess I'll have to wait. Did you all say they'll bloom late Summer? How big can I expect these to get exactly? I think both are in 6-8" pots. Just coming back from the winter; they actually survived above ground in pots.

Bluffton, SC(Zone 9a)

if you fertilize and water correctly, you might get blooms by june

Sumter, SC(Zone 8a)

John - mine started blooming in June, they do great growth if you feed them heavily ( I topdress with sev. inches black cow and repeat during each bloom cycle plus liquid miracle grow once a month) Mine were about 3' tall in June and blooming by the middle of June

Thanks, I'll make sure when we plant them this week we topdress them. I purchased a lot of the black cow this weekend for the bananas too. I've never used it before, but I imagine it should help a lot of my tropicals this year.

I'm curious how the Black Kow compares to Erth Food. Anyone know?

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 9a)

Black Kow is dehydrated cow manure, what is the Erth Food composed of?

Lexington, SC(Zone 8a)

And where do you purchase it? I am not sure I've seen it. Unless it's in those unusual colored bags at Lowe's.

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 9a)

I think I have read where Woodley's has it but I haven't been up that way in forever.
Have you been to the Farmer's Market yet???? Be sure to tell us if they have anything good.

Lexington, SC(Zone 8a)

I'll see if we can go over tomorrow at lunch or after work. The weather has been so dreary lastly - today's the first sun I've seen since Saturday. And it may be the last until next Sunday. Not that I'm complaining about the rain (or at least the chance of it).

Where exactly do folks have plants in the market other than at Rebecca's Garden area? I have never even thought to look elsewhere and if we go at lunch time we'll be pressed for time.

Lexington, SC(Zone 8a)

Oops, I guess it's spelled Rebekah's Garden.

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 9a)

My gosh, they are everywhere. Just go in the gate and they are all over. There is a large place to the right as you enter the market and lots of different vendors up and down the rows. If I remember correctly, Rebekah's is to the left - or have they moved outside the actual market??? Most of the stuff is ho hum but look carefully and you will find a few gems. I found some true bargains on some tropicals last fall at the place way in the back to the left as you enter.

Lexington, SC(Zone 8a)

Hrm, might have to head over there one Saturday when more time is available. I'll report back soon as we go.

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 9a)

Just take a quick zip through on your way home; you drive up and down the rows, it is all haphazard, no rules of the road at the FM. That will whet your appetite.

Sumter, SC(Zone 8a)

Ardesia - where is the farmers market? I have gone to the "jockey lot" and barnyard flea market on US1 but where is the farmers market? Thanks!!

Fleurs! Hey how goes the backyard issues? I have been a ditz and not dmailed you since we got back from Disney - I am off Thursday - you need any help?

Lexington, SC(Zone 8a)

Hibiscus hibiscus everywhere. That's primarily what we saw at the Farmer's market. There must have been hundreds of hibiscus. A few other things here and there, but I didn't recognize much of it. A few folks have banana's, but most didn't know exactly what they were and the bananas were, IMHO, over priced. I think most were basjoo's though. It's hard to tell with some of them.

We did purchase two hibiscus and will check back when it's not quite so close to closing time.

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 9a)

Red, it is directly across Bluff Road from WIlliams Brice Stadium. You turn in beside the Bojangles. By mid April there will be tons of vendors selling all sorts of things but, as I mentioned earlier, it is pretty typical stuff, you have to hunt for the goodies.

Thanks Ardesia!

I get my Erth Food at Woodley's. It's not cheap, but it helps my talcum-powder sand hold moisture. I especially like using it as a topdressing when I plant my flower seedlings because it acts as a very gentle fertilizer, as well.

Wish I knew how to insert a hyperlink here, but there's more info about Erth Food here: http://www.erthproducts.com/products/erth_food.html#erthfood.
