A new cultivar?

Dublin, CA(Zone 9a)

Here's my latest hibiscus cultivar 'Kirby'. I have to say that he is a lot more hyperactive than any of my other hibiscus. He has to be watered multiple times a day and fed twice a day, so he's a bit higher maintenance than my others as well. And he only seems to get wider, never taller and in 12 years he has never bloomed.

Really I just wanted to show off his new hibiscus bandana...he got a haircut yesterday and I decided it was time to get rid of the winter scarf and put on a nice springlike bandana instead.

And here are some other blooms from the past couple weeks...I've been a bit slow getting my pics off the camera.

Here's Zoey:

Kirby is the cutest, and largest, of all of the above :)
Antique Treasure and Magnifique are looking quite beautiful.

Hi Liz,

All are beautiful including the ever so stylish Kirby!

Kirby is so cute Liz. A dear friend I am sure. I can't believe your plants looks so good. Mine, once again, are half dead!! They just can't seem to get thru the winter.

Kell, you have to get yourself a nice little heated greenhouse! It's really made a difference for me. The year I kept them on my plastic-wrapped patio (no heat, but it did protect them from frost) the few I had back then didn't look nearly so good at the end of the winter. Just tell your DH how much money you'll save if you don't have to replace things every spring, the greenhouse will pay for itself in no time! Although I have to admit my electric bill has been kind of ugly the last couple months...I may have to look into a propane heater for next year and see if that costs me less to run than the electric one I have in there now.

Kirby is Best of Show, Liz!

Thanks! Think I should enter him for Hibiscus of the Year? LOL

Kirby is so cute he deserves a hibiscuit. :-))))))

Oh Liz, I would have a GH in a minute but no room. I so need to move.

Liz, your Kirby is just adorable in that cool bandana!!! Your "other" flowers are lovely too!

Thanks Karen!

Kell--I have no room either, but I managed to find a small 5x9 greenhouse that fits on my front deck. Not the best place for a GH because it's elevated above ground level so cold can get in from underneath the deck, but it's worked out OK (except for the heating bills! LOL) I'd offer to let you overwinter some of your babies in mine, but I was out of room in there even before I ordered 500 new hibbies this spring!

You do need a GH Kell; just imagine having lush blooming flowers even in the dead of the cool, rainy winter. You need it and you deserve it. Tell Tom I said so......LOL

San Bernardino, CA(Zone 8b)

500 new ones?? Wow, Liz, your yard is definitely going to have a "bus visit", this spring, lol! Make sure to let us know when they arrive, muahahaha >:-}

Dublin, CA(Zone 9a)

I was exaggerating a bit! LOL I'm actually starting to wonder if I'm ever going to get some of them, I thought Matt started shipping in the middle of March and HVH at the beginning of April and so far no word from either one of them saying that I have hibbies on the way (foot tapping impatiently!) At least I have my new babies from Robert to enjoy!

Liz your flowers are breathtaking!!! last fall i decided not to keep buying new ones everysummer
so i put them in my garage with a oil heater , also for my kitties. and they have done great so far.spring is here in nc so when it gets hot enough i can leave them out indefinately. i will be curious how the blooms will turn out. any suggestions on food or is miracle grow oK? also i have problems w/ affids with the yellow blooms and i can't seem to kill them so i blast them of with the hose!!
my little daschund loves to eat the dead blooms that drop off. sometimes she tries to steal a good one still on the stem. also the deer took a liking to a plant i gave my mother. they chewed them down like little razors. but they came back beautifully!!!
i loved kirby, i am a moble dog groomer :)!! i love his bandanna!! he steals the show!!

Hi Carmex, thanks for the compliments on my flowers and my doggie! As far as fertilizer, hibiscus don't like as much phosphorus (the middle number) as most plants do, so I suspect that Miracle Gro probably has too much of that and is not going to be your best fertilizer option. In one of the other threads around here we had Barry and Robert who are two of our experts giving advice on what fertilizers are best...I think it was in one of the "help I'm a hibiscus newbie" sort of threads, so scroll down and I bet you'll find it. If you have trouble finding it let me know and I'll see if I can track it down and post a link to it later.

I believe Robert is or will soon be selling hib fertilizer. www.hypnoticblooms.com
