Saying goodbye to one of my favorite birds

Rockport, TX(Zone 9a)

I know that you're not supposed to have favorites, but my Solitary Vireo has been one of mine. I was determined to get a good photo of him eventually, but now I never will. I found his little body in the easement behind my house. There was no obvious cause of death. It just broke my heart. Here's picture of him from about a month ago.

Here he is in the brugmansia, daring me to try to take his picture. I buried him under this brugmansia.

One more, he deserves the tribute.

So sorry Elphaba...he was a real sweetie. I'm glad he was able to brighten your days.

Oh he is sweet! I'm so sorry Elphaba!

Thank you both. It's amazing how attached you get to these birds even though they are wild animals with no affection for you at all! I was just working outside and I found myself looking for him whenever I glanced at the pond. I miss him already. He was such a pretty boy.

Awww… Sorry to hear that. Nice where you buried him then.

Oh happy day! I have another one! I should have known that when you see one, there are always more that you don't see. I'm still sad that I lost a beautiful little bird, but I'm so happy that I get to watch another one! I tried to take a picture, but he wouldn't cooperate. Now, however, I'm glad that he's so nervous and twitchy b/c I don't want anything to happen to him!

Here's my blurry shot! Who could focus with all those branches! Someday, maybe with a better camera, I'll get a good clear close-up shot, but the quest is part of the fun!

Another sweetie pie...I am happy for you!

Good there's another one!

Note though that it / they will all disappear soon - it is only a winter visitor in TX, so very soon now, they'll be heading off up to Canada to breed.

Yes that's true, but hopefully they'll come back next winter!

I thought the goldfinches were long gone, but three of them showed up today including a male in full color.

Elphaba, I'm north and my finches disappear ALL the time! They're not around lately. I always wonder if my feed goes stale.
