Trading?

Warburg, AB(Zone 3b)

Where do Canadians on DG go to propose trades or post a notification of an updated trade list? I am a little lost here as I thought there would definitely not be any trading between the US and us but I already got an email from someone in the States wanting something on my trade list. Are there any other forums here that are solely for Canadians? Thanks everybody...

I asked for a Canadian trade forum long ago and got no response. We don't fit in the regular one and we don't fit in the International one either. The last time I wanted to do a trade I posted it here in this forum. Nobody seemed to mind :))

This is where you post your trades.

Legally, you cannot send anything to the US.

Ok, folks thanks very much!

Soooooo, whatcha lookin for?

:))

Warburg, AB(Zone 3b)

hee hee... that's cute, threegardeners. I don't really know what I am looking for.... (laughing out loud). This will be the first year in my whole life that I am going beyond my boundaries and knowledge and planting actual things outside of typical veggies & herbs (read: real FLOWERS... gasp!! & hedges & shrubs etc. !). We just moved to our very first house (part of the exodus of city dwellers trying to move where it's cheaper-ha!) in a small village of 500-600 people. We have a very old house and a beautiful lot, both of which has been sorely neglected for some years. However, the original owner (again read: 1959 - 2004) was apparently very well known in this community for her gardening skills and her beautiful yard. I have a lot to live up to and a lot of work to do as I guess the people we bought it from plowed all the old beds under as well as the veggie garden and put it all to grass. So, I am ON A MISSION... for the next five to ten lol!!! But, I have never been happier. As well, I am working on getting the local school (K-12) going with their greenery as there is so much potential there but no one with the time to do it.... Being a domestic engineer.... meh, I got lots of time.

I have just joined Dave's Garden and am really excited to be here. I will be updating my profile with pics, more info and the like in the next couple of days.

I have also discovered wintersowing, and I tell you it is going to change everything about the way I garden... I am so excited!!!!

Soooo, threegardens..... what am I looking for???? Houseplants for my school project, cuttings or seeds and whatever else that is on my wants list but it seems to be getting longer and longer the more I look around. My flower growing experience is this: sunflowers, calendula and marigolds.... THAT'S IT !! So I have a long way to go.... But, how bout you check out my list and I'll check out yours ??

Whew!! Sorry that was so long.... It's just so exciting to hear from people (I don't live with any other gardeners, just a very sweet husband who puts up with my obsessions as best he can ;-)

Happy Gardening,

Kristie

Welcome to the Garden Kristie!!

My trade list is pretty much unorganized. I've got over 100 house plants and many perennial beds. Just because it ain't on my list doesn't mean I don't got it :))

Warburg, AB(Zone 3b)

Hey, threegardeners... does that mean I may have something that you may want? And you may have something that I may want? I added a bit more to my wants list.... check it out and maybe you'll get a better idea of what I would like, you can tell me what you would like and we can talk trade....

And hey ! Thanks for the welcome.... :-)

Welcome to DG Kristie!

You will never find more amazing people than the gardeners that are here. I sincerely mean that.

Just when I think that people can't possibly be nicer, somebody does or says something that makes a huge positive impact in the quality of my day and life.

Don't think I'm rude if you don't see much of me. I am looking after my DH who just returned home from hospital this week (after surgery) and I am booked to have a spinal fusion done on April 9. I am not avoiding anyone, just busy with life right now.

I know what it is like to be a newbie but if you have any questions just ask. The people are really helpful.

Here's hoping your yard is full of beautiful flowers and you can achieve your goal. Of course I don't think I will ever have enough garden. LOL. Just not able to do it this year and that is going to be a huge test for me. I am planning on watching and planning for the following summer.

Hugs to you

Welcome Kristie! It's nice to have you here.

Welcome to Dave's Garden, Kristie. The subject of Canadian trades comes up every so often here. I think I have said this before, but maybe it's been awhile. This forum used to be called Canadian Trading. As so little trading and so much chit chat was going on, it was renamed, but it was still to be used for the purpose of trading in Canada.

I can't remember what it's called, but it's above the task bar on my computer, the place that shows you what a link is when you hold your cursor over the link. Back in the days when our Dave had more time for his sense of humor, he did all kinds of fun things like that. If you hold your cursor over some of the other forums in the list, he has tradeehfor the Canadian Forum, hemheads for the Daylily forum, fatplants for the Caudiforms, and my favourite - redmeatoffthebone for Carnivorous Plants.

So now you know too.

Ste-Julie, QC, Canada

Hi Everyone and welcome Kristie. I haven't been on the Canadian forum in awhile, and I find the most amazing articles and people from across Canada. I'll have to make a habit of checking it out at least once a week.

Can someone tell me how to change my author name. When I entered it, I wanted to return to change it, but could never find out how after it was submitted...Is it possible??? Please let me know

If anyone is interested in Poppy's, the big beautiful orange ones, I have loads of seeds and will be happy to pass some on. Every year, I get more and more and my neighbors are so jealous of my Poppy's.

Spring is coming, and I wish you all a season of happy gardening.

North Augusta, ON

To change your name, I believe you have to contact admin. or maybe d-mail Dave...the contact us button at the bottom of the page will work.

Spring better get here soon or I'm gonna go insane LOL

Verona, ON

Does this mean 3 G you DO NOT have spring east of me? Horrors of horrors!!! How much more of this can we stand????

Kristie,

Welcome to DG. You will find some awesome Garden Centres in your area. I used to travel Mon-Fri throughout Central & Northern AB for my job & always arrived home in Calgary with a vehicle jam packed with plants, trees etc. Some of the best deals can be found on the "off-the-beaten-path". Edmonton has a huge selection of really great garden centre & pop-up greenhouses. Check out some local community plant shares this spring or the Edm Hort Society. Your area is a lot easier on plants than Calgary. More daylight ours, warm nights and longer growing season. I remember going to Warburg when I was a kid. Do they still have the cream can cafe?

Havelock, Canada

Kristie - Do not hesitate to contact Dave or his admin. They are so helpful and will send back an answer almost immediately.

Hugs from Havelock

I forgot to add that if you don't know how just go to home and then scroll down until you hit the bottom that has Contact Us in the Menu. Easier than pie.

Kristie - Welcome to DG. Sorry it's taken me awhile to get around to here, but I'm temporarily back at work running a food bank I thought I had retired from 2 years ago. As soon as we hire someone new (interviewing on April 12), I'll be a lady of leisure again.

I've not gotten involved with trade lists, but have traded a lot of Hostas with someone I met on DG who lives fairly close to me. (I specialize in Hostas). I think that's one of the biggest benefits - making the connections with people you didn't know existed right in your own community. That doesn't mean I wouldn't be open to longer distance trades though. And while plants are just about impossible across the border, seeds (while not really legal), will often make it.

Hope you continue to enjoy DG.

Welcome to our happy not so little gang, Kristie. I play with Kg & a grade 1 class. We have beans on the class windowsills and various cuttings in water so the kids can see the roots starting. Also started floating some daylily seeds so they could see germination starting. Am doing an experiment with the grade 1 beans, tap water, bottled water, beans planted in soil and using miracle gro and non-miracle grow. Believe it or not, this is maths. They have a weather chart as well.

When school starts again I'm going to take in a couple of carrots, turn them upside down, scoop out the middle, fill with water and hang them in the window. Just a fun thing to do.

The problem with gardens at school is .... the summer. We had some school plots when I was in Victoria. They always were pretty ratty in the summer unless we went over and cleaned them up.

There are some great school garden projects in Winnipeg. Some of the hort. societies have major projects with the kids. So... Good luck with your plans.

Hello fellow Albertans/Calgarians!! I'm rather new to Dave's, but I've been chatting to some 'mericans, and to Joannabanana lol
I'm looking for a Cane-Like Begonia - and hopefully I have something to trade back to you.
This plant is an old-fashioned one, sometimes called Angel Wing. It's a houseplant here, but is grown outside in Southern US.
It's leaves are about the size of your hand, and grows 5-6 ft tall. It has rather sentimental memories attached to it, but I've not been able to find it in the stores or garden centres. All they have is the miniature of it, not the one with big leaves.
Does anyone know where I can get a cutting of a stem?
Thanks bunches for any help anyone can give.

I think I have that one...let me go take a pic.

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Take a look at Greengate - they usually have a lot of houseplants and I think I have seen that one there in past years.

Nope, mines different...

Thanks FancyVan - unfortunately GreenGate doesn't have this plant. The lady I spoke to has been there for years, and she knows of the miniature, but not the tall cane-like one.

ThreeGardeners - if you have this plant, may I get a cutting from you? The stem is rather large, about the thickness of your finger (maybe a little smaller hahahaha)
If you send a stempiece, and keep it moist, I should be able to cut off the part that dries, and root the rest.

Thanks for your help!

Helloooo! I never about this. I've been trading with US members alot, couldn't find many Canadians that would trade or have their tradelists up. I've traded with alot of US DG members and the seeds went though. I never knew I needed a phyto even for seeds 0_0.

Will post my list up for trades etc. =)

TORRINGTON, AB(Zone 3b)

Toronto, ON(Zone 5b)

Who would like to trade with me? I'm looking for hyacinthus "crimson queen" (bulb) or some hellebore seeds/rhizomes/roots and beefsteak begonia cuttings. I can offer/buy some hyacinthus "Jan Bos" and "Gypsy Queen" and some Tulip Bulbs (Exotic and frilled...the nursery has alot of selection) from a local garden centre or some other tropical plants.
