Black eggshells?

Klamath Falls, OR(Zone 6b)

Anyone know what would cause the coating on these eggshells? As you can see by the darkest one the coating can be scratched off. That was the first one. They are now getting progressively lighter. We finally cracked open the black one and the egg inside looks perfectly normal. These are our DD's chickens and are free range so she doesn't know who is laying these. Weirdest thing I've ever seen.

Yes, that is very weird. I wonder if it`s something the birds have been eating? I as well do not know which hen lays which egg. I really wish I could find out. If you find out or know anything, please let me know!

Something in the diet crossed my mind too, but I don't know. I've scoured the internet and haven't come up with anything yet. I'll post here if I find/hear anything.

What kind of chickens are they? Weird......I would defintely want to know what caused it too. Marans super dark eggs is like a wash too, I got actual finger prints in one the other day when I picked it up just after it was laid, while other brown eggs are brown shells not a coating. I have cleaned eggs and washed the brown off so I looked it up and it is like a candy coating!

Maybe some of that ash still floating down from Mt. St. Helens?

Stilwell, OK

lol. Wasn`t that a while back? Idk. I know a few breeds lay colored eggs. Maybe it`s just not getting all the vitimins it needs? It would be nice to know if it`s 1 or more hens. ??????

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

i read that Maran pullets [and possibly wellsumers] can have black eggs at first. ALL egg pigment may be scratched off. Color is only shell deep... i would not be concerned unless they are supposed to be laying WHITE egg LOL

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

did you find out who liad those? better yet, did you incubate some???

Hi! Any chance those are duck eggs? My mom raised Cayuga ducks, and the eggs have a nice blackish coating during the spring, when the ducks first begin laying. The coating can be scratched off, revealing a greyish-green eggshell underneath.

Centralia, MO

we have 2 cayuga ducks and they lay that "dirty" looking egg. But they taste LOVELY!

Columbia, TN(Zone 7b)

HisWifeTiff,

That's good to know! We've got 3 Cayuga Ducks (1 month old in two days) and we're hoping there is at least 1 pair in there. Two are crested. Do you know anything about that gene that causes the cresting?

Centralia, MO

No I'm sorry I don't, these are our first ducks. We have 1 pekin and 2 cayugas, we had bought 6 ducklings but 3 were drakes :(

The ducks lay reliably every day (except for the day after mowing, usually only 1 will lay but the chickens don't seem to have a problem for some reason?). The chickens are not as reliable and take a lot more storebought feed. The ducks are wonderful about foraging around for all sorts of things and we rarely see them actually eating feed from the feeders. Their eggs are also about 25% bigger than the largest of the chickens eggs. Good luck with yours, we are really enjoying ours!

Thanks! Just watching them swim is a treat. I don't expect any eggs from them till next spring since mine are just going on one month old.

Lovely...you nailed it! Just talked to DD and they have 2 Cayuga ducks and 1 something else. No pair. The 1 cayuga drake they had got eaten by some kind of predator. Thanks for the reply and solving the mystry.

Maineiac...lol the ash from Mt. St. Helen, but I do have some jewlery made from that ash.

Centralia, MO

so she has chickens and ducks? That solves it then!

MollyD I have a friend in (I think) Ionia? I come visit every year in August for a week and we eat several times for breakfast at a place called something like Palminerios on the water in Canandaigua. We toured a winery there, my first ever, what a fascinating process winemaking is, and what history! What a lovely area!

Columbia, TN(Zone 7b)

Sorry to say that restaurant closed this winter. Owner took sick and closed it down, sold off all the equipment. Was one of my favorite places to have breakfast! :-(
Thank you. If you come out again give me a heads up. My Paul drives wine tours on weekends so he knows all the wineries very well.

Oh No! It was a tradition! Well, hopefullu my friend will have found another place, or if you have any recommendations I'd love to hear them! I am trying to remember the name of the winery we went to, I remember it made Kosher wine that could be served at Passover. Does that tell you which one it was?

Columbia, TN(Zone 7b)

I'll ask Paul when he gets home. He probably knows which it is.
I haven't tried the new culinary center yet but people say it's good food and on the lake. Looks pricey to me.
We haven't found a really good place to replace Palamini's but there is a Panero's which has good food at decent prices on Rt 20/5. You might try that one depending on what you like for breakfast. Most of the places by the lake are going to be torn down for a major project. They're putting in condos and a big hotel. That means that most of us won't get to enjoy the lake from that viewpoint except when we drive by or stop at that lake front park.

MollyD

Centralia, MO

that's a shame, it was such a nice little area, too bad a big hotel is going in!

Columbia, TN(Zone 7b)

They got rid of all the trailors and mobile homes that were across the street too. Just a few left on the side streets but their days are numbered too.
Paul says could it be Widmere winery located in Naples?

MollyD

Lodi, United States

When I moved here from Victor NY I moved from one wine region to another. One day when I was driving down a local country road I suddenly saw a huge winery---Canandaigua Winery! They have opened a winery here in Lodi CA. We are also the location of "Woodbridge Winery" the one they advertise on TV by Robert Moldavi. It sounds so idyllic--but this is flat, hot Cental Valley territory where they have grown grapes for over 200 years (Spanish were here first). Woodbridge is a tiny local community that has been swallowed up by Lodi--has a few nice older buildings--but is not scenic at all. But I guess "Woodbridge Wines" sounds better than "Lodi Wines".

We are officially in a drought with the driest Spring in recorded history--growers are starting to plow under crops that won't make it. The wind has been fierce and constant. The grapes though will survive almost anything.

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

a winery in Canadanaigua? a Canadanaigua winery in CA?

oh, dearest, me, i am a wine fan, and a wine club member...

Centralia, MO

Widmere, that's it! I bought some wine jelly that was lovely, but now that I started canning and making my own jellies (mint and some citrus is all I've tried so far) I won't have to but it. BUT they have some fabulous mustards, they are really nice.

Columbia, TN(Zone 7b)

tf we're in wine country here surrounded by hundreds of wineries of every size you can imagine. On weekends Paul drives tours (varies from limo's buses and a trolley) going to different ones. Sometimes it's the client's agenda, sometimes it's pre-planned by the company. You'd be surprised what people will pay to do this!

Catscan many wineries also have branches up in Canada now and they're marketing down in NYC too.

Tiff that's a nice big winery. I'm partial to the small family run operations where you can taste unusual wines (like ones made from different fruits). btw have you had the grape pies in Naples yet? I had one and was not that impressed ^_^
