New babies today

Phoenix, AZ

Hi everyone...

I just thought I'd share my excitement. Our babies arrived this morning at 6am...what a special Easter morning! The kids were so excited to wake up to little peeps! So far, they're all thriving and eating and drinking and bouncing around and peeping up a storm. It's been about 5 years since we've had new babies, so it was quite a thrill...

Happy Spring!

I love the heavy breeds.

We only have one adult hen left (tragedy a few months back, we had rescued a new dog and he promptly killed all my hens....very sad), so anyway, we decided it was time to replenish the backyard flock. It's so fun to have chicks again...it's been 5 years since the last grouping, and was 7 years before that...

What a beautiful bunch!

I love the heavy breeds too. Please let us know how they differ temperament-wise--You are in a great position to know!

Congrats Gothic Garden! You'll love having a mix, all of my hens are different breeds except for the silkies and polish, and they are different colors. It makes for a very interesting and colorful flock!

We moved up to the bigger "brooder" cage yesterday. It was a little sooner than I expected, but the sneaky little buggers decided they could get out of the little pen (up and over the cardboard barrier, lol), and when the kids got home from school yesterday, the chickies were running all over the patio. The silly dogs were just laying there and the chicks were literally running over them (glad we only have 2 chihuahuas now because our great dane would have had a lite snack!)

Anyway...new photos...

Another shot of them...we love heavy breeds, but I couldn't resist a few polish this year too. So far, they're holding their own in the mix!

Ooooh, I forgot to add a picture of the "watchers"....these cats (Jewel and Surfer) feel the need to stare out the door into the brooder. My orange tabby "chirps" at them (anyone else have an orange tabby?)....just thought it was funny & the cats will sit there the entire time the arcadia door is open and just watch the babies....amazing how they forget that the chickens will beat them up when they're big enough, hehe....

Terrific pictures Kim! Did you buy the eggs and hatch them?

I've been wondering if one of the chicks that came with my order
might be a polish. She looks like yours so now I'm pretty sure.
I think she was one of the free "rare breed" chicks the hatchery
thru it in for free.

Hi Tam~

We got day-old chicks...and just really lucked out because we had them in the brooder all nice and warm, and watered & fed within 12 hours of their hatching, so they're doing great!!!

There are 2 polish varieties in that photo just above the cats...in the front, there's a little 'Silver Polish', and just off to the right (past the brownish one who I'm thinking must be an araucana) there's another little yellow one with a top-puff, and she's a 'Buff Laced Polish'. You can definitely tell the Polish because they have a distinct little top-puff which reminds us all of a poodle-do, hehehe...

Did you get yours as chicks, or as eggs to hatch?

I got chicks. We got them from MMH during their AE problems & lost
10 of the 35. The little fluff top I suspect is a polish is the last recovering
but I think she/he will be OK. She's almost white. Let me find a picture.

She's the one at the feeder

Kim, how are your chicks?

Lumberton, TX(Zone 8b)

Kim, I don't have any chickens yet (still dreaming) but I DO have an orange tabby (Angus). I don't think he's ever chirped, but my other two cats have.

I'm hoping to get some hens for the backyard, but keep putting it off.

All 40 babies are doing fantastic!! They are super funny today too because they are taking "flight" across the brooder and jumping all over eachother....so funny!! Thanks for asking, I'm so happy they're still thriving!!

How fun is that! Mine are doing the same. I'm going to clean up a barn
stall and let them run around there. Mine are 5wks old now so I think they'll
be OK this way. I'll have two heat lamps down low so they can crawl under
there if its too cool for them.

Can you share pictures of your growing chicks Kim?

Kim, how are all those chicks?
