H australis giant leaf !

This is a cutting less than 6 months old. It took one month to grow nice big roots and another month
to send out a new baby leaf.

And this is what the first new leaf looks like now... it's twice the size of it's other leaves !!

Paula, that is really some leaf. How exciting for you! You must be doing something right, to get such awesome results. Are you growing in a green house?

No, no greenhouse, just good ol Hawaiian weather... I sure was surprised that this leaf came out
so large, especially since being the first new growth on it.
I've noticed that this one likes quite a bit of water, although I do let it dry out before watering.

Anyone know what kind of australis it is ? I have another one that is supposed to be australis ssp. australis, but doesn't compare to pics of those. This one actually looks like the ssp. australis to me.
My other one is much smaller leafed, dark green and pointy ends and very small vines. I know my terminology is bad, I don't know the right words to explain anything. Sorry !

Paula...that looks to me like a hoya that has gone 'bush' around here...it, I believe, is H. australis ssp. tenuipes. I collected seedlings in Kapoho...the leaves get VERY large and it is a great grower and bloomer. H. australis ssp. australis has more 'fuzzy' leaves....the ssp. tenuipes 'kapoho' is very 'bald' and shiney.

Your description is right on Carol. They all ( the flowers ) look so
similar to me. On the hoya australis, i mean.
Here is a pic of the flowers from the plant I got the cutting from.

Just wondering Carol.... I was searching on here about ssp australis, so that I could read more about it. There is a thread you started in Dec 05 that is called " The world came crashing down " or something like that ? I am confused now, because it says that what you thought was ssp tenuipes is ssp australis ? Did I miss something in the postings in between ;P ?

I have 2 h australis. The one above which is shiny and glabrous. The other is smaller, dark green, very
slightly pubescent and much smaller branches ( vines ). I'd like to know for sure what each is called. I'm so confused ! :) Should I post a pic of the pubescent one ?

Well - I THOUGHT, when I got that seedling, that it was ssp. tenuipes. Then i was told it probably wasn't because ssp. australis can change alot. Then i bought ssp. tenuipes and, what i think, is that big leafed australis that grows wild down in Kapoho is just a seedling of AN australis - . Can't get much closer than that. There is something about the time of year when it blooms...(which I forget)...but mine seem to bloom nearly all year off and on. Some of these hoyas that have been around for SOOOOOOOOOOoooooooooooo long in cultivation, that have been in everyone's collections since St. Peter was a Corporal have produced so many seedlings, sports etc. that is it hard to tell for me....

Good enough for me ! I guess I just like to know what I have :)

So, I'm going with ssp tenuipes on the large leafed one and
ssp australis on the smaller darker one. Here's a pic of the
smaller one for reference....

PLEEAAASEEE correct me if I'm backwards :)
Thanks !

Ya know...David Liddle, at this point would say something like..... - basically it is H. australis, period. Just like all the cultivars of H. pubicalyx that get all muddled up...they are, in truth, all H. publicalyx. Full stop.
