I posted this over on the other Tropical forum but I didn't get any replys. Maybe someone here has had a M. basjoo that died and stayed around a while?????
I have a m. basjoo that is planted in the wrong place and it is way too large to transplant. I am thinking of cutting off the leaves at about 7' (that's about where they start) and painting the cut edges with Round up to kill it then using the trunks, there are at least 7 hefty trunks in a cluster, as a structure to grow vines on. I am wondering how long these trunks would stand. They are fibrous so I am fairly sure they will last through the summer but does anyone know how long after that? Each trunk is at least 6" in diameter.
Thanks
Musa basjoo
Sorry you haven't gotten any responses, but I did give the link to our resident expert for your other one. :) I am sure someone will be along to help you out. Sorry I can't, but I hate it when posts go unanswered, yet many people view it! Good luck!
Thanks Misty, I did get some answers.
A, I never saw this posting before. I don't really understand why we have a tropical gardening and a tropical forum, I get the feeling I'm missing out on a lot.
as to your banana, I would think the trunks would eventually turn to mush and then your vine would have no support.
I agree, anytime they have died - they turned to mush fairly quickly for me. Mine haven't been as large as yours though yet.
I didn't even know there was a Tropical Gardening Forum. Now I wonder what I've been missing too.
Well, my contractors have a Porta Potty standing right beside my unsightly banana but as soon as that smelly thing is gone I plan to amputate the tops and see what happens. The basjoo is grown for it's fiber so it must have some structure. I'll make it my little science experiment. If it gets mushy and falls it can't be any worse looking than the porta potty. LOL
Nowadays it seems there are forums for everything under the sun. I miss being able to keep up with things but it is spread so far and wide now.
Have you tried coating it with something like a polyurethane, like used on wood projects?
Hmmmmm, now you have got me thinking...........
nah, I say whack it and sashay over to Hobby Lobby and get you a pretty doodad stand, shelf, statue, whatever, lol
Glad you got some help. :)
My 7" diameter basjoo stump has survived the winter. It's not at all attractive, but it's definitely there. I would suggest simply cutting the stems up and adding them to your compost pile.

It's funny, I love the look of the trunks, it is just the raggedy leaves that are so unattractive to me.
Hey Voss, what do you think of some plastic flamingos?????
whatever rocks your world, gurl!
Agreed. :) Considering mine have been subjected to a few feet of snow, sidewalk shoveling, freezing rain, and cats hiding, I'd bet yours in lovely SC weather differently. :)
