i posted this in the other thread. want to keep this info up so new visitors can find it.

please, anyone who makes a report in their state, post the phone number, contact info, and any other helpful information to make it easier fo rothers in your state...

"NO, it is not the USDA that you need to contact. And you don't need proof first.
YES, in some states it won't be reportable.
YES, you should report it anyway. not being reportable is a sort of legal/political term.
YES, you should get the birds tested.

Each state has to handle this on its own first of all. Contact your State Animal Health Department. look up in phone book or internet, it is toll free. press zero and ask to speak to person in charge of reportable Avian diseases. IF you have to leave a message, after doing so, press zero and ask for someone who is in. Do this until you finally talk to a DR so-and-so. Then explain YOUR chick situation calmly and slowly so they can take notes. They will have to look up info and get back to you. They can arrange to have tests done, or tell you what lab to go to.

It is helpful if you were able to get a vet to test or diagnose your chick. But your state animal health department has it's own lab [at least one] where they can test chicks, and better to test them while still not dead yet. Once the state has their own test done, they can decided whether to "report" to the USDA. After several states have done this, then they will decide if further action is needed.

So, you see, EACH ONE that has rec'd sick or dead chicks should write down notes. What happened/when/symptoms/approximate numbers. EACH ONE needs to make a phone call. EACH STATE needs to make it's own determination.

None of this will happen without YOU, the individual, taking the time to do what is right, REPORT it. Then let each state do it's thing.

Please, do the right thing. None of these posts here are official. They are helping others, but they are not getting the info to the proper authorities.

I am waiting to hear back from Austin. Anyone who wants help reporting in Texas may dmail me for details.

very sincerely,
tamara"

I called the Texas Department of Animal Health in Austin. These are my notes to share with you...

in Texas call
CORRECTED NUMBER: 1-800-550-8242
press zero.
Carla Everett
the other contact was Dr Hellman, state vet [he is out or in a meeting], his assistant is Delores.
let me talk to Dr. Schwartz... not legally "reportable". so just get a diagnosis, then contact USDA and the state where the chicks came from.

Here is a link for those of us in Washington State. You can find the email or phone number for the state vet that handles your region. I emailed to report SYMPTOMS and to see if they would be willing to test for AE.

Here is the phone number to the Arkansas livestock and poultry commission 501-907-2400

One of the Doctors doing the AE testing is Dr. Ghori 501-907-2430 thats the number to his receptions desk (pam)

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

not reportable in Texas means that once a diagnosis is made by your vet, they don't HAVE to report it...

finally at the end of a 7 minute conversation with a state official, he said, well, if losses were considerable...??? so i told him AGAIN how many had been lost... so, in that case, it would be best to contact STATE vets directly....

lost in the political mess??? after working with your own state try contacting the state that the hatchery of origin is located in... anybody know that?

Columbia, TN(Zone 7b)

they're in Webster City, Iowa

would you believe i got a call back? i thought i posted earlier... well, i did it in the wrong thread LOL:

"ATTN TEXAS FOLKS:

The state is finally listening. If you will contact me with your information, i can arrange voluntary testing by state and US authorities based on the numbers that you provide. I need to know your location and your phone number, the total # chicks, total dead, total sick."

Luther, MI(Zone 4b)

Thank you Tamara.

I didn't order from MMH this year, so don't have the problem. But as you say, the people have to do some of the work themselves, not just jaw about it here. Doing that is okay to let others know about the problem, but then it is part of our job to do the rest of the work.

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

still need to hear from more Texas folks...

Judsonia, AR(Zone 7b)

I just posted on the other forum, but crazy chick disease is this disease, and it's not a virus it's a deficiency, for vit e

Avian emcephalomilacia (vit E deficiency )

which is what he thinks my chicks have. he is testing for AE the virus

avian encephalomyelitis but doesn't think my chicks have it.

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

That is good to know there are two AEs. i must have gotten them mixed up during my searches. I hope your chicks test negative for the virus, kathy!

Columbia, TN(Zone 7b)

Do note that while both have the same AE's in their names they do not have the same exact name if you write them out .

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

Thanks, Molly, yes, & they are different.

RedTailRanch, what response did you get?

Spokane, WA

They have not returned my emails or calls yet. Either they are so busy that they haven't gotten to me yet, or they are not taking this as seriously as I am.

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

hang in there.

At first i had that problem with Austin. ahd to give my credentials to the vet to get him to listen. also told him basically "i understand this is not reportable, and I know what reportable means". it means kind of "un-voluntary". I told him these people with sick chicks were willing to voluntarily get them tested and take necessary steps. i also told him no-one was scared of a govt farm takeover, people just want testing done without being out MORE money. and if indeed this is what it is, cooperation between the states to get USDA to get Iowa to do something about the conditions in the hatchery. not like they are gonna shut down voluntarily. a business shutdown is completely different froma fram clean-out.

also i mentioned to him, and this may be why he called and offered a "way", that this was an excellent opportunity to educate chicken folks on HOW to report, WHO to report to, etc.... preparation for AI...

hope that helps. keep calling till you tlak to a state vet as opposed to an operator or an assistant.

any other states watching this thread? i am keeping a tally so i can tell Austin what the other states results are.

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

keeping this up where folks can find it. there is an email circulating attempting to explain the outbreak and say it is under control. but it does not appear that this email originated from MMH.

hoping to hear test results from Arkansas, Texas, Pennsylvania and Washington soon.
