My hen is bleeding very badly! What do I do?

Stilwell, OK

My rooster has made my hen bleed. She dosen`t seem to mind but it looks like it hurts. It`s very badly cut. I need to disenfect it. But how?

Woodsville, NH

I would seperate her from the rest, they will peck her worse. Some say neosporin, some RAW honey, some benedine solution *sp until someone else replies, I would keep her away from the others dry and warm. There is also something called blu coat?? that is supposed to be good too

You can get something like this http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?pcatid=1763 to stop the bleeding but like LoraK you'll probably have to separate her to stop the others from picking her to death. It's a bird thing.

When we have had pecked or injuries that are open we apply a paste called Pine tar. It stinks but all the other birds leave the injury alone and after a couple days it seems to be healed...we continue for about a week just to protect the area.
This might work. It doesn't cost much and it lasts a long time.
You may want to check the roo's spurs and feet...may need some trimming so the incident isn't repeated the next time he gets romantic.
Good luck! Jeri

Hey its me again. I only have 1 other hen in with her. ( I had to get rid of my rooster but I still have 5 more chicks to add. ) So do I still need to separate her from the other? Thanks for the great advise. I need to take care of it quick! Let me know A.S.A.P.!

Yes, chickenlover, you need to separate her from all chickens until she heals. The hens will pick on an injured hen and can even kill her. So separate her immediately. When she is all healed you can put her back in and watch carefully that no one picks on her.

Liquid bandaid always works for me

I disinfected it just wallago. I`m 11 years old so it was kinda hard to hold her down. But I managed. It must have been cut longer than I thought because the blood was very dried. She is doing well and I think she`ll be ok. She ( or my other hen) laid a HUGE egg today. I`m wondering ik iy`s a double yoker. Maybe. I guess I`ll she when we have eggs for breakfast.:) Thanks for all the advise. I really appriciate it!

Hey, chickenlover, that isn't a picture of a hen. But, it's a beautiful buck. Did you get it with a bow or gun?

Stilwell, OK

I know, I didn`t have a picture of my chickens on my computer. Thanks, it`s a 11 point buck. I killed it with a gun. Everyone ( well deerhunters anyways ) were saying that`s bigger than any deer they`ve ever killed. That`s only my second. I killed a doe when I was 10. Now I`m 11. Can`t wait til next season! Here`s a pic of me and my dad with it. He was gonna make me kill a 4 pointer! Glad I didn`t! Thanks Again!

Well, the biggest I've ever taken was an eight pointer. So, you're better than I am. And, you're welcome.

Nice buck - congrats on that one. You make sure and shoot one bigger than your Dad next year too!
You can buy a breeding jacket for your hens which will protect them from getting cut, and helps the rooster to hold on also. Do a search on ebay or something. They are a bit expensive, but you should protect your girls. If you don't have a lot of hens it should be just the ticket. It is too expensive for large flocks though. Hope she gets better soon.

Here's my biggest "buck" LOL. He weighed over 1000 lbs.

Just a quick comment about the use of pine tar...it stinks and the other birds do NOT like to smell of it... they left our injured bird alone after we applied it... It even worked with a pecked open turkey wound...they all avoided her! and she grew up to 17# thanksgiving feast! LOL

Pine tar is an old, old remedy. I remember my grandmother using it for something, but don't remember what. And she was born in 1870. So that was a long time ago.

Stilwell, OK

Wow, that is an old product! Don`t worry about it, she`s all taken care of. I ended up using neosporin. I think it worked pretty well. The cut is still open but atleast she`s not getting pecked at and it`s not infected.

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

The best thing I've found as far as antiseptic type things and lord knows if they even still make it...had it for my horses
Fur zone or something like that
Florescent green Vaseline type stuff, black plastic tub....
Once I put it on a creature nothing was pecking it off
At least then they had time to heal......

Chickenlover, I think neosporin is a good product. In fact when my DH went to the foot doctor today, he told us if he gets any more sores to use neosporin on them. If they don't heal, (DH is diabetic), get in to see him.

It seems like I always come back into the info after the fact...Pine tar is an old product that a lady told me about years ago and I still use it...LOL it is cheaper than going to a Dr. of any sort.;-) The lady I learned so much from was a "hillbilly" from the Kentucky Hills and very wise.
