baby turkeys thrashing and crying

Adairsville, GA

just bought some day old baby bronzes. they kept crying and a couple hours later 1 was really lethargic and kinda rocking back and forth. it cried the loudest. then it fell over with its eyes closed and just wouldn't move. its legs were stuck straight out. my husband put it out of its pain. thats what it sounds like. pain. another one fell over and is doing the same thing now. the last one is starting to rock. the last two are leaning on one another and what seems like "talking" low to each other. what the heck is wrong with them? i am so mad at the place i got them from. any ideas anyone?

I am no turkey expert, are they eating? I was told to make sure my turkeys were eating so I put keets with them so they would do what the keets were doing. Are you keeping them at the right temp?
No clue on what makes them spasm, did you buy them from a store that could have bought them from McMurrays? They have had problems (to say the least) with a virus in chicks.

ok I remember a site that had a forum just for emergencies, it was the coop or something cannot find it. You can post here: http://backyardchickens.com/forum/viewforum.php?id=10

I just googled poults can get very stressed by moving them. Maybe if you dip their beaks in a sugar water solution?? Have you ever had poults before?

Adairsville, GA

we have had them before, but this is the first time this has happened. they have their baby food and light with a heat lamp. the one just layed down and it looked like it was have seizures. god it was awful. the last two are no longing crying in pain but constantly peeping. their feathers are fluffed, they are wobbly, they don't want to drink or eat. i don't know where the guy gets them. i have had bad experience with chick deaths from ideal, so hatcheries are a risk anyplace. i just need to know if they have something really bad of if its contagious. if they don't live i'll send them off to get tested and try to get my money back from the garden supply guy.

Murray McMurray does carry Bronzes, so I would definitely try to find what hatchery they came from and if it is McMurray let them know there is a problem. The symptoms sound similar, but earlier in developing than the AE chicks.

It almost sounds like poisioning of some kind. Birds especially have seziures before they die of lead or other types of poisioning. That would explain the time window of all becoming ill at the same time. Maybe you got some contaminated feed? I know it's not unheard of for rat poision or insecticide to end up in feed. SOmetimes it is isolated to a couple bags, sometimes a whole batch. I feel very badly for you and hope the others recover, but I think I might take the feed away if they survive and feed them something else. Boiled eggs chopped up with oatmeal, cereal or corn meal and be good for recovering birds. Good luck!

i feed the same baby feed the others get. they musy have been sick when i bought them. i know their feet are purplish red colored and they cry. maybe bad legs or poor circulation. i'm hand feeding them and eye dropping water with vitamins. then i hold them lightly while they "walk". build leg strength maybe. the last two are still alive though. another day, another chance!

Woodsville, NH

Wow, maybe that got injured or too cold????? did you call where you bought them? You are a good poult person for trying to save the poor babies. Good luck with them! Keep us posted.

hes said they must be cold. they have a 250 watt heat lamp! then he said they don't know where the food was. i told him i personally showed them several times where it was at. he insists i have to have a chick with them so they can see and learn from the chick. i told him they are in quarantine not only because they are sick but because they are new. why on earth would i infect the rest of my chicks? he replied i should come by next week get 3 new poults for free and buy a chick. what do you think? money back or try again? why do we put ourselves through this? my husband says its because we are crazy.

Woodsville, NH

Well I would ask where his chicks come from, don't say anything about the AE, do you still have the dead poults? Some where on this site some listed a free/little money to have you dead checked for diseases. It could have been BYC I was over there yesterday. Anyways, I hope they have their act together by the time you get new poults and if that all he will give you, make sure you get ALL NEW POULTS! Hey, why not, they are already stunted at the least.

the symptoms really sound like AEV.. turkeys, ducks, quail, pheasants, geese. they can all get it.

i posted some links in a new AEV thread.

sorry about your turkeys. thank goodness you quaratined them.

virus lives inpoo for 4 weeks... survivors could carry it i think?

I've always heard
(now don't get mad at me turkey lovers)
I've heard that the turkey poults are too stupid to find food and water and need other birds to Teach them how to eat and drink and where the food and water is

Woodsville, NH

Thats what I was told too so I brooded my guinea keets and a couple of chicks. I think they just plain forget to eat! (wish I had that problem!)

Adairsville, GA

still wobbly with reddish purple feet . they are eating and drinking. the best news of all is they are sitting and sleeping! no cries! nice quiet slumber. now to figure out the leg thing.
