Musa Basjoo question

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 9a)

I have a m. basjoo that is planted in the wrong place and it is way too large to transplant. I am thinking of cutting off the leaves at about 7' (that's about where they start) and painting the cut edges with Round up then using the trunks, there are at least 7 hefty trunks in a cluster, as a structure to grow vines on. I am wondering how long these trunks would stand. They are fibrous so I am fairly sure they will last through the summer but does anyone know how long after that? Each trunk is at least 6" in diameter.

I don't think they will last the summer, the heat will destroy if the round up doesn't do them in.
You could cut them down and just transplant the corms they will come back fast.

Thanks TMan! :)

I was going to say that, TM, too. Banana are simply layer upon layer of fibrous cloth...here they would last about 5 months!!!!!

OK, guess I'll just chop them down and I won't transplant the corms, this, IMO, is not an attractive banana plant for my garden. It might be much prettier where there isn't a constant breeze shredding the leaves.

Thanks

I am sure someone would be interested in them for postage if you are just going to pitch them. :)

These are showing up all over the place now, it would be cheaper to buy one someplace. These are so large and heavy the postage would be over the top.

You could always have a basjoo yard sale! LOL

LOL, muy neighbors are hoping I will get rid of this eyesore soon; it is just the ugliest plant ever. The wind tears it up and it is always in shreds and half the leaves are brown. It is also too tall to groom now.

IF you have a friend....or if you have other bananas or fruit trees, the chopped up banana trunks make super mulch/fertilizer. We always leave the leaves and the stalks in the banana patch so they break down and ferrtilizer....full of potassium.

I am planting a lot of cannas around mine so I hope to have them protected from the winds.

I have always left the fronds around the base of the plant and also used them around my smaller, more manageable bananas. That was another bone of contention with my neighbors. Very messy!

But that's just me.............
