Waterlily seeds wanted!

San Gerardo de Rivas, Costa Rica(Zone 12b)

Hi, thought I'd give this a shot. Does anyone have waterlily seeds for trade? I'm not fussy lol - miniatures, full size, tropical, hardy, day, or night bloomers would be ok. I don't have aquatics for trade but rather a selection of tropicals. Please check my Tradelist. Oh yes, lotus seeds are another possibility!

Thanks!

If you can wait till the end of our summer like late Aug. I can send you some.
Don't know the names of the lilies but there is pink, red and yellow.
Hope to have some lotus return this year and those are both pink.

Yes, I can wait crazy4brugs! Beggars can't be choosers, lol. I'd love a "mixed bag" of seeds from your plants. By your nickname I assume you like Brugmansias (slightly obvious). I'll check your Tradelist, if you have one to see if we can make a trade. I have a few brugs, but not named cultivars, just local things I took cuttings off of. I'm hoping my red ones will be a nice dark red (sanguinea). I started them from seeds I brought back from Panama a couple of years ago. The Mother plants, as well as several nearby siblings, all had gorgeous very dark red flowers. Unfortunately in the same area were other shades from a very yellow/orange through the other orange/red shades. If you like Daturas as well, I have 'Double White Lady'.

Thanks for your offer!

Hi vm, last year I thru out so many seeds from sooo many plants. There wasn't anyone I knew that wanted them, then I came across Daves. This summer I'll be saving all the seed and then I can put them on my trade list.
Sending you a d-mail.

Hi vm and crazy4,
I just read your posts!! wow, I tried to save what I thought was a seed pod from one of my pond lilis, but when it dried out, I did not see seeds? I have grown some lotus from seeds tho :) They grow so fast! I was loosing my pond due to evaporation, I had less than 1/8 of of my pond and water, but thank goodness for all the snow and rain we have had! I just looked at it yesterday, and WOW, it's up to the top now :) I had to take almost all my pond lilies and put the in the crawl space in tubs for winter. I have not been able to see if they are still alive. There are only maybe 4 pond lilies that were sunk into the pond last fall. I have some lotus seeds too from trades, and of all things I went to an estate sale, and found a handmade screen and lotus pods inside a box!! The owner of the house was a dr, and had lots of hobbies! The good news is that when I found the box w/ the goodies in it, no one knew what they were?? Just junk the auctioneer said, so he gave the box and screen and pods for FREE !! YEA

Here is a picture of whats called SPADDER DOCK, it's a pretty lily, leaves are large and it grows so fast! It was one of those, you dig like crazy in a huge farmers ditch, with your bare feet and pull up like CRAZY :) I like it anyway. I have some pink lotus seeds too! I have not had the time to get them started maybe this summer :) If you can let me know how you get your pond lily seeds, I would greatly appreciate it.

Sorry vanillaman, I goofed. Water lilies need to be reproduced by division because the seeds don't come true to the parent.
And the seeds that I find have to be kept wet if they dry out their dead.
But there will be lotus seed, and I'll save them for you.

San Gerardo de Rivas, Costa Rica(Zone 12b)

No problem! I know they don't come true from seed because they are hybrids so who knows what you will get, even if the seeds are viable. I just want to try a bunch of seeds for fun. Not sure if that's correct about needing to stay wet though, although I'm sure it's best. Waterlily seeds are offered for sale at lots of websites and are stored and shipped dry! Years ago I purchased a pkg. of mixed seeds and had almost a 100% germination rate. They grew well for several months before I killed them, lol! This time I plan to be more careful and not make the same mistake twice.

VM, what kind of packaging did they use for the seeds?

what website did you find the info on. I was looking at my water garden book, which I now see is 10 years old.

I'm just on my way out right now, but will look for websites later when I get back. You could just try Googling "waterlily seeds" and lots should pop up. Those seeds I bought way back when were just packaged like most seeds, probably in a little waxed paper thing, inside a paper envelope with a photo and instructions etc. You know the "run of the mill" seed packaging. I bought them from Dominion Seeds in Canada, but they haven't had them for several years now. I would have got another pkg. from them if they had.

Sorry, I'm rushing at the moment!
