Fence garden suggestions?

Hi all

I have a 4' tall picket type fence set back about 6' from the road. It extends about 170'. It faces south and gets sun most of the day. Several mature pear trees grow on the road side of the fence for about 50'. The soil is clayey, but not horrible. I would like to plant some assortment of perennials/self seeding annuals along its length. I have a 1925 craftsman house and my other gardens (such as they are...I've only been gardening here for a couple of years :) ) tend to be informal mixed cottage-type.

If you were me...what would you do??? :)
