what are the tricks and secrets of rooting clematis? are there differences depending on which group the clematis is in?
rooting clematis
I am totally not an expert on this subject but wanted to tell you what I learned by accident. First when building my beds some 5-6yrs ago, I covered everything in a few inches of good compost. Then when I was unable to get around much to work in my garden for a few years following a couple of knee surgeries, several of my clematis ended up spilling over and running around on the ground (and over all of their neighbors). Where they made contact with the moist compost, many of them rooted all on their own (I think this is called layering when you do it intentionally). Now I have small 'extras' of Sugar Candy, Duchess of Edinburg, and Nelly Moser (these are just the ones I've noticed) sprouting up in my beds in areas anywhere from 7-8in to several feet away from the parent plant.
Others with more experience may well have better info, but having seen how well layering works, if I were trying to root one that's what I would try. Maybe pull one or more vine away from the support, lay it on the soil or across a pot of soil, and secure it with something like those lawn clips.
Hi Barb-
I've done it with cuttings~just after the new growth stiffens, but yet not woody
I'm with Scutler on this one. Thanks to the layering method I now have 3 new Lemon Chiffon and 3 new Miss Bateman.
well seedpicker you need to get some cuttings going on that red one you got. hahahahaha thanks everyone. sounds like i can do this. wish me luck.
Barb great question. I am going to try this too. Now how long does layering take?
From my experience it takes months. I put a lot of compost where I bury the nodes (removing leaves). The compost keeps it cool.
crossvine can be done by layering. i am told that if you do it in the fall that you will have a new plant by the spring.
This is where I learned about taking cuttings and rooting them. So far, so good!
