Green leaves turning black

South, TX

I have a Blackie Bryant (think that is the name) and it was doing fine. It is young. Now, the outer leaves are turning black. They are not soft. Now the black is starting on the next to last leaves. HELP. It seems to be fine, not too dry or wet. I am not happy.

I sounds like a soil problem. I would try taking the plant out of the pot cleaning off the soil and black leaves than repotting in clean african violet mix. Maybe someone with more knowledge will drop by.

My first thought was "too wet". Hope someone else with more knowledge comes along. I do remember one time I had some kind of mites in the soil (you could actually see them), and had to break out the crown and repot because the leaves were just sort of wilting away. Of course, at my house it could have been fleas or something.

I just repotted him a week ago, but I will try again I guess. I actually thought he was too dry, but watered him even though he is wick watered. Really sad about it. I have not had a major problem yet. I do have a plant, a trailer, that is light green. I repotted her and I hope she gets better. These are my only problems so far since Dec. Not bad I guess, ha. Lucky until now.

Sally.........DON'T get discouraged.
I have been there myself. MANY times actually.
I only started growing gessies in October and there have been LOTS of ups and downs......but stick with it.........try everything.......eventually you will find what really works well for you in your environment and with the way you grow. Either that or you will learn tips/tricks that work for you that alter some things in the way you grow.
One thing that I have recently learned which has helped me alot is a medicine dropper (like the kind they give in kids medicine). I don't wick water so I fill the medicine dropper and only use 1/2 of that on my really tiny babies. Once they get big enough I start bottom watering but at first I start them on medicine droppers. Seems to help with my over watering issue.

Don't give up :) I will have LOTS of AV babies (hopefully) by fall (if not sooner).

The rest of my Gessies are doing great! Just these two. I am a gardener, so I know "stuff" hapens and you learn from it and get the plant well or just go on, but I still hate it, ha.

Afterall, this really is all about learning and growing. I have learn so much gardening for so long. Getting back into violets has been wonderful!

I was just in looking at my plants on my new stand, SO much fun. My hubby loves the new stand. It is beside our desk area. He loves to look at it, sort of like an aquarium, relaxing.

ANYWAY, I noticed several plants have many buds coming up so I know most of them are happy. Thank you for the pep talk Kim!!

Sally, when you have an av problem, post a picture or pictures of the problem . There are a lot of good growers on here. The ladies who posted above could tell so much from a picture...........good luck
