Growing Vines in Containers

Lilburn, GA(Zone 7b)

I have a second floor deck off my kitchen with no access down into the yard.

Would like to grow morning glories or some such vines. I have some pretty big pots out there right now that I used for annuals last year.

Any suggestions on flowering vines that folks have had good luck with in pots? Suggestions on complimentary annuals to grow with them?

I appreciate your help!

Austin, TX(Zone 8b)

I love Sweet Potato Vines. Both the lime green and black variety grow extremely fast. Not much on flowering but could compliment and contrast what ever else you plant.

These vines were planted in late May from 4 inch pots. The pic was taken in July, after several whackings to keep them somewhat orderly.

That's a beautiful color combination!

Whar size is the pot?

morganc - wonderful plant combinations and the stone highlights it even more. Terrific!

Moganc...what a beautiful container!

I used the sweet potatoe vines out there last year...they sure did well in our hot, full sun and humid conditions. The only problem I had was keeping up with whatever was trying to eat them the whole summer!

I think was I'm looking toward is something that flowers.........

Thank all of you for your kind remarks.
I got on a lime green and black plant kick last year, that I'm still playing with.

The pot in the pic previously posted is 18" X 18", fairly good sized.

But I fell in love with the sweet potato vine because it grew so fast, and of course it was lime green!

Have you considered Hyacinth Bean? It flowers! And grows sooo fast! This vine, planted from seeds, covered this arch in just a few months.......and I have seeds saved!!!!

Beautiful, wonderful and terrific. What a beautiful setting, too. I wish I lived next door to you.

I just bought some of the varigated sweet potatoe vine. It is silvery green with purple edges. Does anyone know if it grows as quickly as the others. The leaves are smaller and overall it was half the size as the others I bought. Maybe its just younger.

morganc- that hyacinth bean looks like it is in full sun. Am I correct? It is beautiful!

I grow Mandevilla, Butterfly Pea Vine, Snail Vine, and Clematis in containers and they all do just fine.

Timely reminder, toy747. I've had two Mandevilla vines in separate pots for 16 years now and just bring them indoors and put them in a sunny window for the winter.

Austin, TX(Zone 8b)

Yes, the Hyacinth Bean was planted in full, fierce, Texas sun....and it thrived!! YEAH! Anything that will bloom in this heat, and not look like toast is very welcome to us.

I've not seen a varigated sweet potato vine....it sounds beautiful, could you send a pix?

Here is the varigated sweet potato vine. I like it, I do have to say it almost looks artificial though.

Here is a close-up. I just planted it.

I don't have a name or any info about this, but won't it be beautiful? Any idea what it is or how big it gets? The leaves are almost dry feeling, like thick tissue paper.

OMG! Whatever that plant is...it's gorgeous! Where do find those?

And I love the varigated sweet potato vine.....although....it would be hard for me to give up my lime green fixation. I think I'll look for it in the nurserys anyway, as I am trying to wean myself off just one color. :-)

I found the big purple(almost black) and pink leafed plant in this pot in a greenhouse here, but unmarked. Anyone know what it is?

I looked it up. Alternanthera..... That's all know. I love it! I had a difficult time finding something I liked together with the varigated Sweet Potato. I'm with you I can put chartreause with anything!

Love those bountiful vine photos. Very lush!

If you like, you can do Japanese Morning Glories in pots. I'm starting some JMG vines for our deck, too. They say they aren't as wild and agressive as the traditional morning glories.

And if you need more info on JMGs and the others too, there is a lot of discussion on the 'Morning Glory' forum about how to start them.

And two good links from the 'Vines and Climbers' forum about a variety of vines that grow well in containers, too.

I really got the 'vine' bug this year and started all kinds of seeds and cuttings.

Your project sounds fun! t.

p.s. most are adding a bit of those 'watersorb' moisture crystals to their vine pots.

South Florida, FL(Zone 10b)

morganc, your plant looks like Calathea 'Dottie'.

wow!

thanks all for your wonderful suggestions, I really appreciate them!

terichris.....that plant is beautiful. thanks for the name of it.

morganc....never thought of doing the hyacinth bean in a pot....will try that...have seeds left from last year.

tabasco.....thanks for the links. good idea about the watersorb crystals.....I'm right outside 'hotlanta' city limits.

Austin, TX(Zone 8b)

Toy--It is! It is a Calathea.....but I will call her just "Dottie". Thank you.

Tobasco--thanks for the links.....more vines to come I see.

I just love all you people who love plants!

HAPPY EASTER!

terichris-we have alternanthera's around here but nothing like that one. Did you ever figure out what kind it is? I'd LOVE to have one like it.

Nashville, TN(Zone 7a)

That's all the tag said...Next time I am back at the nursery I will ask about it. I don't know anything about them. It looks like easter eggs that got tie died! I want to put it with the lime green SPV! I don't know if it will get big enough to "hold its own weight." It's only 6 inches across & about 3" tall right now.....But that color combo would be knock out!

Almont, MI

That looks like "Crinkle Red' alternanthera. It gets 15" tall. Kinda slow grower as is most alternantheras. I planted some with a burgundy cordyline, a salmon begonia "Bellfire" and a couple of light salmon geraniums.
Should be pretty if they don't get overtaken.

Nashville, TN(Zone 7a)

That sounds beautiful! Mine are hidden in the mulch right now. I snatched them up at the nursery because I didn't want them to get away, but I didn't have a spot for them. I may put them in my strawberry pot.

Lilburn, GA(Zone 7b)

Krnbrohl.....looks like you are right on the mark on the 'crinkle red'. Thanks for the info!

Now I want one.........I start my search....anybody have any suggestions?

Terichris....do you know if the nursery you purchased it from does mail order?

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

krn - your container sounds so nice. I, too, had the Cordyline with salmon and loved how the colors played with each other.

Nashville, TN(Zone 7a)

I couldn't get their website to come up. Their phone is 239.455.8472 Rays Garden Center in Naples. They were just a few dollars. If they don't let me know. I go out there quite a bit.

Wayne, NE

FlamingoCarole-I found the crinkle red on ebay if you can't find somewhere to do mail order.

Lilburn, GA(Zone 7b)

thanks all for your help!
