I bought some eggs online to hatch, I know they have to rest for 24 houses, which end to point up during that time? Thanks in advance!
These is my instructions for hatching eggs for a friend who hasn't hatched in awhile and I don't want to steer her wrong, did I forget anything?
I hatch them at 101, I turn them twice a day. Fill the try according to the instructions with water and don't forget to keep it filled and fill the other ones according to the incubators instructions. I stop turning them at day 18. And don't whatever you do open and try to help any chicks. I do if the chick is drying out and still isn't out then I do as a rule if a chick isn't strong enough to get out, it won't survive, some do though. You need to keep the lid closed because they need the humidity when hatching. When they are fully dry and walking well I put them in a brooder at 95 and drop it 5 degrees every week
Cannot remember
Hi, LoraK. I thought you were suppose to turn them an odd number of times per day (at least three time). And they are stored with the large end up. But all I have is "book learning" so someone will probably correct this:-)
EEEEEEEEKKKKK I only turn twice. Thanks!
i have heard of those who only turn twice, i also read odd number. that is so that the yold doesn't stick to one side, assuming that from the last turn of the night to the first turn of the morning will be too long. so with odd numbers, it isn't on the same side every night.
i blamed only turning twice for only hatching out one chick [Chuck]. but it was probably just too early, not enough humidity, etc.
i start chicks at 100 and go down 5 degrees a week.
BIG END POINTS UP! That is where the air sace goes... oh, i see catscan covered that too. guess i need to leave DG and head to the feed store, more chick starter!

Thanks! I had good luck with hatching shipped eggs last year. Silkies were over sold at Ideal so I am hatching some for friends (ohhhh she might read this) And another friend is hatching but hasn't in a long time and I would feel awful if I gave her bad advice (oh she might read this too LOL)
I am even toying with the idea of buying some showgirl eggs. I wonder if there would a market for them if I hatch more than what I need.
Thanks everyone!!!!!
well, i would LOVE showgirls! even if they aren't SQ yet, i would gladly take culls since we won't be breeding them... but that seems too far to ship the little things... maybe there will be someone closer to me [& maybe she is reading this LOL]
anyhow, i think you could definitely sell the showgirl chicks locally! if you can part with any of them!
So, do chickens count how many times they turn their eggs? I can just see them standing there going "Oh gee, did I already turn that egg this time?" or "Which end is supposed to be up?"
It frusterates the heck out of me that I can't do (with a $50 incubator, thermometer and turner,) what a bird ( with a brian the size of a lima bean) can do. Every year I say I am giving up on it and every year I try my darndest and get a few chicks.
Maybe I should try sitting on them, but I don't think my butts warm enough. Besides, the thermometer would get uncomfortable after a while.
If I do hatch them I will breed them with silkies only for swapping eggs next spring. Well I am off to find that auction!
Hey all just poping in every now and then..
No chickens for me this year but fluiding in mo.
YUCK !!!!
yeah, try to stay off the streets and stay safe...
