I am falling in love with my Delaware chick "Paneer"--she is sassy and friendly and completely reasonable. She and the buff Orpington are always the ones to run up when I open the brooder and today she flew up and landed on my arm (and she is only 3 weeks old). I googled "Delaware Chicken Personality" and got a perfect description--"friendly and curious". Does anyone else have Delawares? I usually don't like white chickens, but she is really winning me over.
Delaware experiences?
I've always had a few Delawares in my little backyard flock, and I agree...they are super friendly girls! They've always been one of the few breeds who happily let my kids go in and pick them up...
Hi GothicGarden! So few people seem to know about Delawares even though they are on the critically endangered list. I know I didn't. They are so pretty with the white flecked with black--they look like naughty brides whose gowns are smudgie and shredded. Mine is a a total character and is ruling the roost with her partner in crime the Buff Orpington. I've decided to rename them Delphine and Buttercup--but the rest are going to keep their "cheesey" names (eg "Colby" and "Cheddar" for the RIRs). How do you find the Delawares egg laying?
Sorry for the delay in replying....well, I think they were good layers, and I never had a problem with broodiness either. It was so sad when we had "dog devastation" last fall because all my nice girls apparently trusted the 'rescued dog', and well....I'm starting out with 2 new babies now. *sniff* However, as long as all goes well with these chickies, I am looking forward to having 2 nice friendly Delawares again!
I foster rescue dogs myself and had one dislocate my cat's hip. He was a great dog--just had a thing about cats. My 5 dogs are convinced I would kill them if they got the cat--but I wouldn't trust them with chickens. All that flapping and squawking is just too exciting!
GothicGarden, I wish you the best of luck with your Delawares.
