Yesterday, my colleague in office brought a papaya fruit. When it was cut at home, he was quite surprised to see another little fruit in the fruit. Such rarities / oddities are given to the press because that is interesting to the public. Occasionally, we see pictures in the papers given by the public of various fruits when they notice a growth of any familiar object, just as a curiosity item. My friend wants to do the same. So he asked me to take a picture and it is here for you to see and my question: Why this formation takes place - just as twins in humans?
Dinu
Papaya in papaya - rarity?
Very interesting Dinu, thanks for sharing.
Can't say I've seen that before. Not sure I'd even compare it to twins. It'd be like having a baby born with another baby inside it (play twilight zone music here).
Very interesting photo.
the term in humans is fetus in fetu or parasitic twin.
How exactly do they "handle" that situation?
Yikes, this is too weird! I've never heard of that before, not in humans that is. I have a feeling lavender4ever is pulling our legs, and I hope we just have 2 of them, lol! I can't see how that would be possible with my knowledge of "the birds and the bees" and how babies are made sort of thing. Who knows these days with all the genetic tampering going on however? I think I'll go do some Googling about this!
lol hope you googled and then your eyes goggled! That is real. It does happen and really they do nothing for it except surgically remove the embedded twin. If you think that is wierd you should google chimeric twins! That is a condition where you fully absorb your twin and you retain both sets of dna! You can have two totally different dna's in your body and there is no tellin where it will be. Some hair can have one dna and others another. There was two women who were told they were not the mothers of their children because their ovaries and eggs were different dna's! One was even going to be prosecuted for welfare fraud!
OMG, what is the world coming to? You seem really interested in this lavender4ever! I hang out sometimes at that Forum about Plant Breeding/Hybridizing. I find it very interesting what people are doing in that area.
Thanks for the info!
Yeah that is my dirty secret I like the world of the strange!! Plants and people! Would love to visit the museum of medical oddities on the east coast.
Oops, it's not a secret anymore!
That's ok, I embrace my eclectic tastes! Really though I do not think it is so odd for plant blossoms and fruit to fuse together like that. A naval orange often has a little baby orange inside the bottom! sometimes weather ,water , or other stresses make plants do strange things.
True. I have lots of navel orange trees here and I notice those baby oranges inside them. They're usually right under the "navel" lol! They still taste good, and no seeds!
cell mutation is still such a chance thing and when it stabilizes we have something totally new! Hey btw did the papaya taste good all the way through?
