We planted 6 tomato and 4 cucumber plants over the weekend in the garden. I just couldn't wait. They've been on the outdoor patio for a week and they are about 4 to 5" tall. The garden is in an open area and the weather calls for mid-40's tonite and tomorrow night. Should I cover them? I'm in South Louisiana.
Thanks for your time and have a nice day.
Is mid-40's too cold for small tomato and cucumber plants ?
Empty gallon liquid containers make great heat sources. If you fill these with water and place one right next to the plant's stem and leaves, you create a mini-greenhouse for them. Place the tomato cage over both and cover with a sheet of plastic. The water will release heat through the night and provide several degrees of warmth. If you do this early on a sunny day, the sun will warm the water during the day. If you put it out on a cloudy day, I would start with warm water in the container. Don't make it too hot. You don't want stewed tomatoes. Be sure to remove the plastic during the day or excess heat will build up inside the case.
