I am in love with bulbs... the last three years establishing our wooded two acre hillside plot I have planted on average 4,000 per year. No matter how many I put in the fall and early winter (I buy all the leftovers at the box stores and my local nurseries too) there are never enough in the spring! When is the proper time to rake off the oak leaves? When should I fertilize and with what? Have mostly daffs and crocus. Last year I put in quite a few iris reticula (sp? new fave!!), a ton of scilla, crocus and fritillaria (last years fave). What is your favorite naturalizing bulb for woodlands? HAPPY SPRING!!!!!!

jmorth! Congrats on the success of your forced bulbs! Must be nice to have these bits of sunshine inside these gray pre-spring days (at least for here). Love your pic of the refrigerator! Gives me a good idea for next year's bulb project and that old beer fridge in the garage!

abby--you have so many questions about bulbs it would make an excellent new thread for the bulb forum! I'm sure everyone would like to chime in with ideas for you! Good luck!

Pretty splash of springtime in your home, j. You have so many different kinds of bulbs in bloom and they look so pretty! I'm going to tag this thread so I know which ones worked for you.

I wish I would have forced some bulbs. I was just reading Brent & Becky's paper catalog last night and they have quite a long list of pre-chilled bulbs (meant for planting in Southern yards) that they said could be used for forcing. I did not see this info on their online catalog, though.

They also have pre-chilled bulb pots already planted that they will send out, which, for me, a lazy gardener, might be a last minute alternative choice too. Although I like making my own combination plantings such as you did!
