I live in CT, zone 6 and am wondering when to prune my very large buddleia.
Thanks.
pruning buddleia
I prune the spent blooms off mine all summer to keep it blooming. To prune for size, I wait till very late fall when it has gone dormant then prune it to the height I want. One I had years ago would grow to 10 or more feet if I didn't keep it pruned back hard every fall. This time I bought a shorter variety that supposedly won't get taller than about 6 feet. So far at about 3 years old, it hasn't exceeded that, which is fine with me. I don't like to have to get a ladder out to prune off the spent blooms!
I am in zone 6a. I prune mine this time of year every year and they do great. I prune 6" - 12 " high. Some of mine get at least 8' high. I also try to prune the spent flowers to keep them blooming. I have some that have come up from seeds, they are beautiful - but, I have to pull up several a year that are growing where I don't want them.
Ditto to both Naturelover and MyRee, I did same to mine. The big tall variety; I prune it down to the ground, here in the South, the bush already up 4" tall. It will take no time for the plant to surge up and produce flowers on new growths. So the harder we prune them back the more they'll put out flowers for the butterflies and hummies.
Thanks, all. On the advice of a gardening friend, pruned the thing down to about 2' in spring, and it's now close to 6' and very bushy.
