I love to look for plants starting to peak through the soil. My daffs are blooming now and I love the scent. I am sooo sick of winter. It's still pretty coo here but the daffodils are in a very sunny spot and my snow drop are long finished. I have some tiny iris (don't know the name) they're in bloom as well. If we could just have a little less winter....

I walked out the door this morning and I could smell the hyacinths and hear the bees. Heaven!!! I even got a few bees to pose for a picture.

LOL Actually...that is a Persian Lilac that I purchased as a "special buy" in a 3 gal nursery pot for....ya ready? $9.97 - - a couple of years ago!!!!

Whimper... lilacs here stopped blooming... can "they" not create lilacs that re-bloom? How is that for a gardener's suggestion!

Now THAT would be a lilac I'd pay good money for....their blooms are fairly long lasting but a 2nd flush say in Sept...how great would that be?

Fragrance1st - I love the color repetition in your first photo on this thread, the one of the white fence. I don't think I've ever seen the dark and light purple hyacinths together before.

Thank you, I love the different shades too. There's actually 4 different shades, but it's hard to tell in the photo. The hyacinths in the foreground are all 4 colors mixed, then each color is separated by daffodils. Van Engelen had a great web special on a blue hyacinth collection a few years ago that gave me the idea. I get a lot of people stopping by while I'm in the garden to ask about them. My house is blue with white trim and blue/purple flowers with the white fence really compliment each other. And of course, the fragrance is divine. The dafs are "fragrant breeze." Too bad they don't last all spring long.

actually there are reblooming Lilac cutivars including Josee and tinkerbelle and a few others.

You are correct about reblooming lilacs. I should have hinted that they are difficult to grow here due to both, the heat and lack of cold temperatures in winter. Many varieties that are advertised to withstand hot temps failed miserably here. By late May and June, the shrubs were in severe stress due to too much sun.

Ironic though. When I called to buy them, the companies bragged about how they could withstand the heat in full sun. When I called to complain that the leaves were getting scorched, I was told that they do not well here. Sounds to me as if they wanted my money to do well in their bank account instead.

Descanso hybrids and other low-chill lilacs tend to do well. I am testing a 3-yr old Purple Persian Lilac that is planted besides a Crape Myrtle. The Crape Myrtle begins leafing out late... probably after the lilac finishes blooming, and protects the lilac from sunscald during the worst part of the summer.

I would be tempted to try additional varieties but lack a good spot right now. Maybe I should create one! Hee hee hee

I just added a preston Lilac. They do suffer here sometimes in our hot humid summers. If they are not pruned for maximum airflow they get mildew sometimes.
