Tampa and Romaine - is it too late?

Dade City, FL(Zone 9a)

I have a beautiful raised bed full of romaine and tomatos. The romaine has come in wonderfully and I have harvested a few. I have some questions though.

Is it over? I have tasted a slight bitter taste in some of the leaves. I have been told this is because it is too hot now. They may have bolted (?) The leaves are swirly on the inside of the plant. On some of them they are a few inches taller in the middle.

Is there a way to keep growing them a while longer? It went way too fast.

Also, I cut some of them and now new leaves are growing in nicely. Somewhere I read, however, that these won't be as good and I should just replace them. Is this the case?

Thanks for any advice. After 3 years of trying, I am finally starting to have some success. The first 2 years I went without success, this year I changed to a raised bed and I am seeing results. I hope it's not over already for the lettuce.

I have a question about brocolli. It seems no matter what I do it bolts. I had some heads starting and now they are all little yellow flowers. What is the answer? They did not get big at all. Deanna8

Broccoli is supposed to bolt. We actually eat the seedheads. The key is for the plant to reach full size before it starts to seed. If the plant gets stunted it will "button" start the seedheads before the plant has a support system in place. The little seedheads get no larger than a coin or button. Usually this is caused by keeping the plant in a pot too long before transplanting. Some garden centers are notorius for this, I have seen them selling broccoli and cauliflower plants that have already buttoned at 4- 6 inches high, These plants have to grow continuosly, any set back in thier growth pattern will caused premature heading. Sometimes you can set them too early, while cold weather doesn't kill a hardened plant, it can disrupt thier growth cycle and cause them to button, The plant should be at least 12 to 18 inches before the seed heads start to form, the seedheads are harvested before the flowers began to open.

Farmerdill sorry I thought when they made the yellow flowers that was bolting. I did buy them from Home Depot and they had formed little heads and it did get cold one night and soon thre were little yellow flowers and now as soon as it gets a little head soon you see the flowers. I keep hoping because there are little side shoots and more heads it will quit doing this. Should I just dump and start over. Deanna Thanks

If they had the buttons when you planted them, in my experience they never amount to anything. I have seen them do this Home Depot and other garden centers. The only way to get decent plants is to get them the same week the truck comes. Bonnie has good plants, but brococoli and cauliflower do not tolerate siiting around very long before transplanting.

I started my broccoli seed today and it is a close call to not start them too soon. I set them out about April 16th here while they are a bit smallish and it works very well.
