Bacopa cordata, Sedum Spurium & Sarmentosa and Violet

Edinburg, TX

Has anyone used these as butterfly larval host plants? I just purchased these today at Lowe's.

Bacopa Cordata - small white blooms with yellow center. I know some butterflies use bacopa monnieri aka water hyssop but not sure if any bacopa species will do?

I went shopping at the dollar store for kitty litter boxes - I use my woodburning tool to melt drainage holes in them and use them as shallow planting pots for ground cover type plants :o)

Sedum spurium aka Dragon's Tears

also in one of my kitty litter planters :o)

Confederate Violet aka wooly blue?

I know the Variegated Fritillary uses Green Violet as a larval host in my yard but am not sure about this species of violet.

This is the Green Violet - hybanthus verticillatus - the Variegated Fritillaries use as a larval host.

Cat,
I've planted bacopa cordata (I think in the past), I used them as pot filler, but I haven't seen any caterpillar using them as host plant. Butterflies and bees moths visit them for nectar maybe, but not where they deposit eggs?

TPP--Do you recall which butterfly uses the bacopa? It looks like a pretty little plant and I wish I had started some from seed.

You will have another great season with the butterflies if you keep adding more and more plants!

I was just reviewing my list of host plants I wanted to add to my garden and of course I forgot about the violets. The little green violet in your picture is cute...will you get butterflies oviposting if you just have the one in the garden? I wonder if that violet will grow from seed here in Zone 6a. Will look it up.

I realized today that I didn't start any 'Gas Plant' seeds for the Giant Swallowtails. Nor did I start chelone and penstemons for the Baltimore Checkerspots. Nor Artemisia stellariana for the American Ladies! I didn't plan very well, but maybe I can still get the seeds...never too late to try for the butterflies!

Taba,

The White Peacock butterfly is supposed to use bacopa monnieri as a larval host.

I get Variegated Fritillaries using a native Green Violet hybanthus verticulatum) but want to see if they or other butterflies will go for these other species of violets.

I know what you mean...never enough time plant everything I want for butterflies. Have to draw the line and choose only those for the butterflies I want to attract to my yard to lay eggs.

Ah, so we don't get the White Peacock here, nevertheless, that bacopa would be pretty in hanging baskets on the deck!
