Growing Brug in North Dakota

Bismarck, ND

Hi
I'm getting really antsy for spring to arrive here in Bismarck. I live in a townhouse so all of my gardening is in containers. I'm been looking at all of the pictures posted here of the beautiful Brugs -- has anyone successfully grown this in ND? I know I'd have to take in inside during the winter -- but I'd love to get one to try it this year.
Would you all recommend a cutting vs. seed at this time of year? I think there are some plants on ebay I could possible buy.
Thanks for any help you can send my way.

I'm not much help in regards to other zones, but I can tell you if you have enough light, fertilizer and a big enough container, you certainly can grow brugs!
I would recommend cuttings over seeds, since brugs don't come true from seed and you won't know what your getting. With a cutting, you will know what color and shape you will get.
Better yet, to order from one of the brug sites where you will get a completely rooted plant and it will be a lot closer to bloom time for you.
www.shop.seedsprout.com
www.countrygdn.com
are some excellent sites to order them.. beware of purchasing on ebay.

Thanks so much for the info -- I'll check out those websites and order a plant from them. We don't have a long growing season up here - end of May thru Mid Sept, but I want to give it a whirl!

See if they will sell you a cuttinhg from above the Y and you won't have long before your first bloom.

That is good advice zz and kenboy :)...good luck westiesam

Four sure if you buy a cutting, that would be great.
Most of the plants I've gotten from Brenda at Seedsprout are ready to Y or have buds already! Same with Country garden.

Westiesam,
I bought a brug here in Minot from one of the local greenhouses this past spring and it is stll going strong. I kept it in my third bedroom, which gets plenty of light, but I didn't water it much so it slowed down on the growth. If you can't find one in Bismark, try the Greenthumb nursery here in Minot. He had a lot of tropicals that I got from there. He also had some bananas, papyrus, cannas, and EE. As a matter of fact I have one of his brugs as the wallpaper on my cell phone.

Hi Tina - Thanks for letting me know about the Green Thumb Nursery in Minot -- that's only about 1.5 hours away and very doable if I can't find one here in Bis. Did you keep yours in a pot outside all summer? They're so beautiful -- I just have to get one for this year. As I mentioned before - all my gardening is done is containers since we live in a townhouse -- but I try to make things look nice with those every year.
Thanks to everyone else for their advice as well. This is such a wonderful community -- Happy gardening everyone!

Sharon,
Yes I keep mine in a pot all summer. If for some reason you can't find one here in Minot, then this fall I'll give you a cutting from mine. I have to do a hard prune to it in October because we will be moving to Oklahoma in November and they have to fit into a 6x12 u-haul. I'm going to call Greenthumb and ask if they will have the brugs in stock this summer. Mine flowered, but only once, but I don't think that I fertilized it enough. Also by the time it was ready to flower again, it was in the house and had dropped all of the leaves and buds.

When you get to OK you will be close enough to come to the TXRU held twice a year, in or around Texas. This Spring it will be in Arkansas and close to Beaumont, just off the Texas cost, in the Fall. There will be lot's of brugs to be had just for the asking.

Sharon,
I just was able to get in touch with Greenthumb and he said that he is not selling them this year. He said that they didn't sell well last year and plus they are poisonous. I will definitely have cuttings this year though so if you want one just let me know and I'll get one for you. Tina

Tina
Thanks for checking with the nursery for me. I'll let you know if I can't find one here is Bismarck -- I'd love to get a cutting from yours.
I heard that they are poisonous, but then I think that alot of plants are. We have a dog, but she would never eat any plants and there are no children in our complex either so that shouldn't be a worry.
Thanks again
Sharon
