I have a sago palm that over the winter, it's frons turned yellow. Will it come back if I trim it or is it a lost cause? I live 25 miles below Waco, and I thought it would be OK
Sad Sago
Hi crafty, I bet if you just trim off all the yellow frons you will have new growth from the center and the plant will look good as the days warm. I keep mine in a greenhouse and every spring I will trim off the bottom frons that have yellowed. We have some outside at the office in Ft Worth that looked dead last year but after a good trim they were huge by summer. Good luck!
I agree... I am not sure of your zone but unless the roots were frozen, your Sago will be fine. I wait till mine gives the annual flush of new fronds and then I prune the yellowed ones. Last winter, mine looked hopeless and surprised me with 13 fronds, the most new growth ever. Is your Sago in the ground?
Yes it is. When do they usually start getting new fronds?
I have 4 that I have in large pots. Have had them for 5 years or so. Even when they are out of the greenhouse in the summer they will put out at different times. Its kinda like they live in their own little world!
Very interesting. Mine has only done so in springtime. I had read that a verrrry happy Sago will only deliver 2-3 fronds a year. I do believe that was wrong. As mine gets older, it puts on a bunch each spring. They are truly a unique plant.
