Hello from Beautiful, Muddy South Central PA!

Carlisle, PA

Hi, everyone--I'm Lin, a fairly novice gardener from South Central Pennsylvania (region 6a). We're having a good wet spring here at the moment, but I'm hoping to get out in the back yard tomorrow (after I take the lawnmower to the repair shop--grrr!) and move a butterfly bush, get some landscape cloth over the planting beds *before* the weeds start to grow, and get things tidied up a bit. We have some iris and lilac bushes in the sunny part of the back yard and some hostas and ferns in the part that is in perpetual shade, due to the south-facing orientation of the house. The front yard is small and prone to be arid. A brick townhouse is very like a reflector oven when the summer sun beats full against it all day long, so I've gone with tough perennial bushes out there, and a sizable pot by the front door for some annual color.

Dave's Garden seems like an amazingly huge, informative site. I've learned a great deal already, and I'm looking forward to learning more. I'm currently looking for some ornamental smallish (5' high, give or take) bushes to plant along the fence in the sunny part of the back yard. I'd like them to be fairly quick-growing--I've had it with the neighbor's chain link fence. Any suggestions would be welcomed!

Hi Lin and Welcome ! Are you mowing your grass already? I still have snow on the ground I was thinking a Rose of Sharon bush or Magnolia would be nice- If it gets too large you could trim down. Bridal Wreath is pretty or a Weigela? Or Snowberry ---there are many possibitlities!
Happy gardening !!

Hi Lin,
Nice to meet you. I am new here to, so I thought I would say Hi. It is strange how some intro posts have a lot of replies and some only have 2-3?
Sounds like you are in the thick of your gardening season, in between raindrops. Us too, I have actually gotten alot done, expanded my front landscaped beds around the house and moved some shrubs and bushes too. Can't wait till it is warm enough to add some plants for color.

Well, hope you have a great Spring and come over to the Swaps and Round Robin Froums, we do some great swaps and have a great time. We just started a Birdhouse Swap.
