Monterey Cypress 'Goldcrest'
Cupressus macrocarpa

This one is being sold in Northern California as Cupressus macrocarpa Citriodora.

I live in Northern California (Bay Area Peninsula) and have been growing 4 of these in pots in part sun. They're doing well but I'd like to plant them in a spot that gets full sun. Can they handle that? Also, how long until they reach maturity?

Hi Anne
We are having a debate about what the real name is of this cypress. What were yours labeled and is the new growth yellow or lime green?

They will love full sun and I bet it will take years to achieve maturity for it grows to about 30 feet.

I bet Growin could tell you about how long it takes.

Where did you find yours? I am looking for a 5 gallon one.

I wonder if this would grow in hot, humid houston. I like it a lot

Hi NERY!!!! LOL!

Of course you want it!

I found this site earlier when researching this tree. It has places it is hardy in. Some are in Texas.

HIYA. nice link. it is not sold in my area but if it grows in Pt Isabel TX and Hollywood FL, it will definitely grow for me.

Hi,
I found my trees at, of all places, the Grocery Outlet in San Jose. They weren't labeled. They only had a little tag tied to the foliage that said "Smell Me" :) and some general care tips on the back. The staff said they thought they came from a nursery in Oakland but weren't sure. They're lime green through and through. 'Goldcrest' was the only thing I could find any info for so I guess..? I haven't seen them anywhere else. I'm hoping you can order them through a local wholesale nursery. So glad to know they like full sun! I really appreciate your help!

Hi again,
I forgot to ask--will they be OK if they occasionally get hit by sprinklers? I know that's not good but would it necessarily kill them?

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

I wouldn't do it in houston. They seem so susceptible to fungus, I'd be afraid of losing the tree. Maybe if you planted some shrub blocking the sprinkler from hitting the tree, you could get away w/ it. Or if Palo Alto is not humid, then you can probably get by.
