Am I the ONLY Houstonian Who Hasn't Finished Planting Out?

SE Houston (Hobby), TX(Zone 9a)

Just checking. I feel like I'm so far behind everyone else in the area. My maters are getting tall and lanky! But, I know they'll take off once they're in the EBs, hopefully, this weekend!

Here's My progress, so far:
I managed to get my green beans, sugar snap peas, swiss chard, and beets planted yesterday in the trellis bed. I added two bags of composted cow manure on top of the sifted compost. Anything that does NOT thrive in that stuff was dead to begin with...
The Tomato seedlings are holding on...
Marigolds are taking off...

Still to do:
Put the maters in the EBs (Saturday!)
Plant the okra, Japanese eggplant, carrots (yes, I'm ambitious), bell peppers, that giant Bonnie cabbage (yeah, right...), the sugar baby watermelons (later, in April)....
Race like the wind to beat the heat AND the mosquitoes!

Do I really wanna be a veggie gardener??

Is there anybody, ANYBODY out there who's as behind as I seem to be?

Just didn't wanna lose everything (like people did last year) to another freak freeze ...but, I know, no pain, NO GAIN...

Its not going to freeze here again. I've have tomatoes in the ground for a week now. Peppers I'm waiting until this weekend on, just no time for those yet. Carrots and Cabbage I do in the fall--it gets hot too quick for those in my yard to plant any later than December. Cucumbers and a squash or too I will probably do this weekend--haven't decided on beans yet or not; I prefer to do bush beans, they are quick and then other things can take their place later. Annuals I take my time with--anytime up to mid-April is OK with those.
=)

Well, I don't have veggies, but I haven't finished planting yet and I still have more stuff coming from the "Evil" co-ops. I am trying to get the stuff I already have finished before the other things come. This weekend is supposed to be great, so hopefully I will be able to get a lot done. I agree about beating the heat and mosquitoes!

Its not going to freeze here again.

Does anyone beside me remember that last Easter Sunday we were at freezing temps? And, afterwards, I was delivering seedlings to people who had lost their crop cause it wasn't going to freeze here again? (and, PLEASE, smile with me here...)

Lest you all think I'm a worry wart, I not. Just want a good harvest this Spring. And, I've babied these seedlings soooooooooooooooooooooooo much. But, no more!

They have'ta fly! Fly little seedlings, fly away. Go off and make cocoons and return as beautiful, black and pink and yellow and red TOMATOES!

It's the job pressure....

It never froze here last Easter, it was chilly but never froze out on the west side.

I got busy last evening and removed the leaf cover and most of the cilantro from the garden. Something is really chewing up the cabbage, brussles sprouts and the "Bonny" you gave me GG. But not muching the green leaf lettuce - strange that they have not attacked that.

Sprayed BT, but did NOT see a single critter before I did it.
Also did NOT see any snails - thought they might be hiding under the leaves.

Will probably pull the rest of the bolting cilantro and give the new tiller a try on Saturday morning - then go to the stock show for the rest of the day..

west Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

probably cabbage loppers on the broccoli Bubba, they are a problem here in the fall--but BT gets them. My cilantro is not bolting yet--but I better get out there and cut it today or tomorrow. It won't be long before it does. I always love to see it pop back up in the fall--I know its finally cooled down then.

Thanks, ya'll. Is it too late to sow seeds, for eggplant & okra?

Deep East Texas, TX(Zone 8a)

On Okra, I would say no. Sow away. It likes the soil hot and won't germinate if too cold. Do you soak your Okra seed first?

SE Houston (Hobby), TX(Zone 9a)

Hey Podster,
Thanks! First time growing most of these things at all. Still a veggie newbie (which is why I ask so many questions). I'm still in a learning curve. I'm thinking that, since you mention it as an option, it probably wouldn't hurt to soak most of the big seeds overnight.

Hi sweetie;
Don't forget the happy garden jewels.

We miss you.

I miss you, too!

How're the COLEIUS doing? How's the gang? I need to stop over and see what ya'll are up to. I've been learning how to become an urban farmer. Grew 103 mater seedlings from seed these last two months. STILL haven't managed to get my 10 planted in the EBs! Tomorrow is my drop dead deadline!!!

I went to bed early (8:00) and woke up at 1 a.m. I got up and did major cleaning in the kitchen, and just now settling down. Haven't been online all day. Catching up. So glad I ran into you!

Hugs and Kisses!

Not to worry, all honest gardeners are on a learning curve! LOL

I've only grown okra a few years and yes, was told to soak the seeds overnight in warm water. One friend uses a bleach water solution. Was also told okra will not germinate till the soil is warm so be patient. Which one are you growing?

SE Houston (Hobby), TX(Zone 9a)

Just plain ole Clemson Spineless. I come from New Orleans, and okra gumbo is right up my alley!

I'm still trying to figure out what veggie it is that has this huge purple leaf that's a show-stopper in a container. I wanna put one on my patio amongst the flowers. Can you help me? I believe it's either an eggplant or an okra plant. There is a purple okra (which turns green when you cook it, shucks...) and I'm thinking that is it. If you can figure out what I refering to, please let me know.

P.S. I managed to plant 8 tomato plants in the EBs today. So very windy and a major rainstorm heading here on Tuesday. The wind is taking a toll on my poor maters this year. Also, I'm tempted to go buy some of those mini-umbrella hats that folks wear to football games, to cover my babies in the rainstorm. Guess I'll just stake those milk jugs to the EBs for protection.

Hugs

Great on the maters being planted out! Sometimes doing it isn't just the right time, only the best available time.

I am not familiar with the purple vegetable plant. I am surprised as I love the color in most plants. Perhaps someone here can tell you... Good luck ~ pod

GG,
There is a purple decorative cabbage. A house about a mile from us has them as a border in their front flower bed.

Thanks Pod and Bubba!
