Excellent photos of the Hairy Woodpecker, and in your backyard .....

The Ozarks, MO(Zone 5b)

Oh Pelle...she looks so sweet and clean too! Nice pics of the other birds also. I don't know if the Hairy's will ever show up here again...I'm beginning to wonder if they were ever here!

Brainerd, MN

Congrats!

Whiteside County, IL(Zone 5a)

ooo, congratulations. Maybe she'll nest in the area. I just love that with one picture you got three species. So fun.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Nice photos!

Hey, I like that peanut silo... Do you have trouble with starlings going after it? I have to keep bringing the peanut butter log and the suet "cookie" inside for a day or two every time they come around (because otherwise 2 starlings turns into 18, and there are big bloody starling fights on the back deck).

Marlton, NJ

Thanks guys!

Hi critter, They don't bother with the peanuts much. They mainly want suet so I have one of my suets in a caged feeder and only put a little in at a time.

The other feeder I have is weight activated and can only hold one starling at a time and the second feeder has safflower in it which they don't like.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Good to know, pelle -- thanks! I'll look for one of those feeders. I might need a weight activated one, too...

Lincoln, United Kingdom(Zone 8a)

Hey lucky you pelle! Isn't that strange, as I saw a Woodpecker on my peanut silo today too!

South Hamilton, MA

We have downies on the feeder, but a hairy yesterday, it had to turn sidewise to get the seeds as feeder needed filing. I hope it returns now that it has been filled.

Marlton, NJ

My weight activated one is called a Squirrel Buster plus feeder.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Thanks!

Grand-Falls, NB(Zone 4a)

Congrat Pelle on your Hairy.

Critter; the Starlings are a problem here, on the Peanuts silo . They're the ones that empties it. If you ever buy one, I would suggest, to get the weight activated one.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Aha! It makes sense that there would be a weight-activated peanut silo. I don't mind feeding a few starlings, but the last time I attracted a flock of them with the suet I went out the next day and found blood and feathers from their fights... not a good thing!

Melbourne, FL

Great news Pelle. I think we'll be getting lots of great shots from you this spring.

Brainerd, MN

My weight activated peanut silo is set at twenty pounds.

Pelle, love the photo of your three birds. Very pretty. Your birds must be pretty chummy with each other. I don't think our hairy wp would hang out with a nuthatch on the same feeder. Now the carolina wrens are so cute everybody likes to have them around!

Love your Pileated pic gardenpom. Very crisp and colorful. We've never had a Pileated on our peanut feeders, just the suet feeders. I suppose you set it at 20 lbs for the raccoons?

Marlton, NJ

Beautiful pic sybil!

I wish I could keep my peanut silo at the tree but the squirrels would damage it too much.

Beachwood, NJ(Zone 6b)

Congrats on your Hairy, pelle! original_sybil, I saw a Pileated in Fl it was like seeing Woody in person! GM

Putnam County, IN(Zone 5b)

Now she just needs to get busy and make some more for you!!

Brainerd, MN

Pelle - the squirrels just hang on it while they eat - then I let the dog loose. Dog-sized rodent wheel entertainment. Everybody gets a little something out of it.

Whiteside County, IL(Zone 5a)

HA Sybil. Nice. My dogs know that phrase "go get the squirrel" too. Such fun to watch. Hope they never catch one though. My cat almost got one one day!

Brainerd, MN

Mrs Ed - I'm with you on that. I whisper the word "squirrel" and the dog is at the door. She is out the door like a bullet and I turn my head and start to pray for the safety of the squirrel!

She does get the chipmunks and voles and sadly, bunnies that get inside the deer fence. It's all in nature's way - I just don't want to see it or hear it. That's the human way it is with some humans.

Jim Falls, WI(Zone 4a)

Just checked this out. Love the woodpeckers. I've been getting 2 pileated the last 2 weeks. Have heard them in the woods but they have never been by the house. My picture is not the best and it will be as good as I can get.

The one is on the suet on the fence and the other is in the lilac bush. Nobody else around here gets as excited as I am.

Oh, that is GREAT. We all have pilieated envy here… so you are in the RIGHT spot. Congrats.

South Hamilton, MA

I bet you are excited. I grew up in WI north of Milwaukee & the only woodpecker I ever saw was a flicker.

Marlton, NJ

Thats great Ves! Congratulations!!!

Putnam County, IN(Zone 5b)

Congratulations!!

What are we doing wrong Mrs. Ed?? LOL

Jim Falls, WI(Zone 4a)

Well I have no idea what I did! Have been feeding birds for at least 10 years. Did add this setup last fall. The only thing different. I have suet, corn and was putting bread out there also. But stopped that. recently. Also have yarn in one of them.

There are the 2 suet feeders hanging off each side. Feeder of corn sits on top of metal fence post! That's where I first saw one.

I'll get it and put it in my tree in the back yard and take some pictures. no one will EVER know. ;)

Brainerd, MN

ves522- congrats!

It's the peanut silo this fall then the bags of suet this winter that landed the Pileated's here.

They are quite the sight!

LOL on the Ivory Billed. :)

Beautiful pics everyone!

Great pic of the Pileated Pair! Makes the winter time kind of fun to have such visitors in the yard!

Whiteside County, IL(Zone 5a)

Hey all,

Does anyone remember which thread had the pictures of the big holes in the trees from pileated? Or if you were the poster, could you let me know or repost? I wanted to show them to someone. I'm thinking it was Sybil, of course!!!

Brainerd, MN

And of course it was me. I will look back and see if I can find them.
