What a great idea to re-use the crib. I love to see some of the thing people think up like that. I was wondering why you did not have a heat lamp, but then i saw you are in TX.....so i guess its not so important as it is WAY up north here. Am i right? I have only had 2 full days out of my 40 yrs that i was out of New England.....so i am not used to other climates. Last Sunday we drove 20 minutes south of our house and the snow was completely melted.....we still have 2 to 3 feet of snow in our yard :( we drove another 1/2 hour and the grass looked like there was a hint of green starting to show..........I sure wish we had some money in the bank to re-locate.

i bet there is a ligth there somewhere for heat. Yeah, way down there she doesn't need much LOL I am in Texas, and have FIVE 250 bulbs in a 6x8 house.

Moodene,

That's an awesome idea! We've been pondering the idea of raising chickens for eggs and meat and I wondered where I would keep the chicks till it was warm enough to put them outside. Now I know what to do. I'll be stopping at all garage sales till I find what I need for them!
Many years ago I raised two batches of chicks and went through a really hard time trying to keep them from leaving their box (and the heat)! This would really keep them where they need to be.
I am so glad I found this forum!

Great looking chicks congrats!

Aw, your chicks are really cute, Moodine. Maybe your room
is just really warm? Great use for the lil crib! Did you hatch
the eggs from your own flock, or get them elsewhere?

I live in central Texas, and this past month we have had
temps in the teens- yes, it gets really hot here, but the key
word to use would be 'extremes'. Raising chicks and
gardening is a challenge. :oP

(may princess kathy enjoy a bright day.)

Luther, MI(Zone 4b)

Hey, truest, haven't seen you for a day or two. Thought maybe the current princess had put you in the dungeon for direlection (sp) of duties. LOL

Moodene, great idea for baby crib. Our pen is made up of panels of 1 x 2s with chick wire over them. They are 3ft x 6ft x 3ft high. I am going to make a divider for the pen so I can have room for any other chicks I get after the first batch is hatched. Only problem is when I have to climb in the pen to clean it. The sides are too high for a short person.

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

you need my DH. he made poop drawers for me...

(Nadine) Devers, TX(Zone 9b)

I have them in my spare bedroom and keep a small floor heater blowing warm air over the port a crib in the room..and a lamp is lit at all times..the room stays warm about 98 degrees..so not much chirping..lol.. I do turn the lite off and they do go to sleep for a bit..lol

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

good mama, get them in a nighttime routine!

Johnson City, TX(Zone 8b)

Your DH made you have poopy drawers, TF? :-O haha
Please explain....your poop drawers.

I hear ya on the short stuff- I got the short end of the stick
in our family, Granny. I have a very tuff time reaching the
stirrup, or getting in the bed of our truck. Too bad, guess
DH will have to unload it! :oP I've been busy cleaning the
pen to ready it temporarily for the chicks, and laying out
where the new coop will be with DH. All that kinda stuff.

may princess kathy not send me to the dungeon, so far, not.

Luther, MI(Zone 4b)

You mean you can get into the bed of the truck without a ladder? I need one to get into the front of the truck and it's a Dodge. If it was a Ford, I wouldn't be able to get in at all. I am only 5' tall and am the tallest female in my family. Sometimes wonder what it would be like to be about 5'6". But, sad to say, that will never happen.

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

i will post a picture of poop drawers, brooders, hen havens, and other goodies he has built... later tonight in his very own thread...

Johnson City, TX(Zone 8b)

Well, I must then be 10 feet tall, Granny! Not! Only 5'2" or 3".
It's a Dodge, and there is a step for the door- I think the tail
gate hits about at neck level :oP

I'm going back to the poultry forum to look for poppy drawers!

may princess kathy have stilts.

Luther, MI(Zone 4b)

DH had a step put on by the door for me, but it finally rusted out. The floor of the cab hits me about butt high so you can see it is a challenge for me to climb up into it. I think the tailgate is about waist high to me, so of course I need a ladder to get up there. If I was 20-something, maybe I could jump up there, but them days are long gone.(about 1/2 century ago). But, you know, stilts might just work.

Oh, I see where your tailgate hits you neck high. Well, we are about the same height, then.

Johnson City, TX(Zone 8b)

Well, a third of a century ago, I might have been able to jump
up on the gate. What happened to my rear spring? Granny, did
you find it? LOL :oP

may princess kathy have rear springs!

Luther, MI(Zone 4b)

Nope, surely wish I had though. I now need two of them to get into the truck..LOL
