My 1st flower bud

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

I started some "Fantasy" Hybrid Milliflora Petunias (Stocks 100 seeds for $3.95) the 1st weekend in February. The pkg said 10 weeks from planting to flower. Not quite 6 weeks & there are buds. How exciting!!

Very cool!!

nice looking plants too, under lights are they?

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Yes, a little shelf & light set from Lee Valley. I have it packed with seedlings & hope DH starts dismantling the swingset and assembling my new greenhouse....I gave him a deadline of last weekend in March, but may need to start bugging him to start it now. I want to start a few other seeds & will need to move these out.

Those babies look great! Great job and set up you have there!

Very cool!

Hey, you should post a picture of your Datura 'Lilac Lefleur' and see if anyone knows what that bud-looking thing is...I've got one on one of my seedlings too.

That sure looks like a Datura flower bud to me! You two must have the magic touch with these things :-)

Lucky you...Lee Valey is the next block over from work here in the city..keep meaning to take a trip over, but lordy, I'd have to mortgage my home just to afford my 'want list' .. must be great quality seeds and good care!

(Zone 4a)

That is one pretty petunia! I just love petunia's in my baskets!

I went to Lee Valley this week for another three tier Floralight, but turns out they are out of them and the suppllier does not make them any more. So I ended up at Garden Retreat buying a different set of grow lights. (my third set)

My husband thought I was fanatical but the saleswoman at GR was sympathetic as she has 24 grow lights herself.

In all my years of datura growing I never had a flower before late July!!!!! Your joannes are magic!

Maybe it's the type of Datura. The seeds were from Theresa_in_BC. They germinated really well for both of us.

I also Datura Ballerina and Datura Black Current that have germinated; Datura Golden Queen has not. But none of them are as robust as the Datura Lilac Lefleur from Theresa.

I got some of those too. I guess it's time I germinated them. I'm new to Datura; so this will be an experiment. Also have a few seeds from a white one that I pinched in the neighbourhood.

Here's an update...lot of color & the datura has a flower

joanna - how long did the Datura take to germinate?

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

About a week. I had a heat mat under the tray

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Mine took about 5 days; had them sitting on a closed heat register....

Ottawa, ON(Zone 5a)

Mine aren't on a heat mat, but if we ever get any sun they'll be in a sunny window. The heat register is just below the window, but I think they are too high to get much of it. Might move them to a warmer spot, but I might see something in a few days.

I think a lot depends on the type of datura. Most are very erratci germinators. This year for the first time ever I have have a germination rate of zero. Two different types. Sigh.

Ottawa, ON(Zone 5a)

Theresa - I'm sorry to hear that.

My first time trying them and I'm happy to report that of the seeds that Theresa_in_BC sent to me germinated well. I still have quite a few left if anyone wants me to send them some. And I've got about 8 healthy looking seedlings. Of the white Datura seeds that I pinched in the neighbourhood, only 1 had germinated, but it looks healthy.

Not to worry Theresa - I can share some of my seedlings; have had a few types germinate okeedokee.

And does anyone know. Do those Datura that Teresa-in-BC shared get very big? Mine have flowered already (like Joannabanana's) and now they're going to seed. Very bizarre. Will pinch remaining flowers off to stop them from going to seed.

ah Daturas - fell in love with 'em in Winnipeg. Saw them as a display in front of a hotel - very striking!! I didn't have any seeds, but got the plants from Golden Acres last year, and had HUGE success - continuous blooming! I gathered the pods, but haven't tried potting them yet. I think I'll try something I saw on the US postings about Peroxide. 1 Tbsp peroxide to 1 cup of water, I believe. Supposed to make them germinate a lot faster.

wish me luck on the seeds...........

Good luck Tallulah41! I will be interested in your progress. Did you but plants at Golden Acres in Calgary? Theresa

Winnipeg, MB(Zone 3b)

Theresa - yes, I did. They're a wonderful window-shopping place lol I got the Daturas there. An associate found the last 3 hiding under a bench. Guess they're pretty popular!
I wanted to get some gazing balls there last year, but O MY what a price!

Anyone know where I can get some that aren't exhorbantly priced? I think they'd be great in my backyard.

Susan

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Golden Acres has those balls on a 75% off table...last week

Winnipeg, MB(Zone 3b)

Joanna - thank you :-)
I'll have to "pop by" on Monday, and see if they're still on-sale........
