Pronouncing Weigela

Waxhaw, NC

Seeing the article in this weeks newsletter got me to thinking about the pronunciation of Weigela. Seeing as how the plant was named to honor a german scientist would not the proper way to say it be Vi gee la, as a W is pronounced as V, and when the i follows the e in german it is pronounced as a long i, and the e following a hard consanent is long as well.

Just pondering, as I have heard this plant pronounced in a number of different ways.

LOL, dirtdigger! You are technically quite correct, but it's been anglicized. So "why-gee'-la" is the most common pronunciation here, but I've heard some doozies! I don't really care how it's pronounced---I can't grow it it this climate. Tried more than once...
