curcuma

Bluffton, SC(Zone 9a)

hey. i have some curcuma alismatifolia in the ground, as well as some spiral ginger, alpinias, and hedychinum coronarium and hedychinum "C P raffil" when should i expect these to start to come up.... the cannas and other bulbs are already coming up here

Beaumont, TX(Zone 9a)

My hedychinum coronarium started coming about a month ago. But they were established plants and a few that I moved. If your rhizomes were out of the ground for any length of time it may take them a little longer to get started.

Bluffton, SC(Zone 9a)

ok thanks. they are all newly planted meaning no earlier than last july

Clemmons, NC(Zone 7b)

diehrd, your hedy's will be first up more than likely

here my curcumas didn't start coming up until June, should be earlier for you though. I wonder about the alpinias and costus but I'm guessing the same as the curcumas...gingers seem to appreciate the ground being warm before they emerge.

Bluffton, SC(Zone 9a)

ok thanks! how warm is your definition of "warm"?

Clemmons, NC(Zone 7b)

you know, I bet if you got a ground thermometer and figured that out for your area...your next science project is already done for you

j/k...hard to give you an answer as last spring seems like forever ago...sorry I can't be more helpful with that. I wouldn't expect to see anything from the curcumas until late May, early June..., but the hedys maybe in April?? SC is so different and then you have the sandy soil, that's my best guess

Bluffton, SC(Zone 9a)

lol you're right! i have always thought SC was more like GA than her own sister state! the soil, to me, when i dig in it which is usually at night, seems a lot warmer than the air outside.... i think it may be in the upper 50's-low 60's. who kows. i just put all the plants from inside outside, so hopefully i'm right that it is warm enough for both the plants and gingers

Clemmons, NC(Zone 7b)

lol...it seems like parts of AL, LA, and even TX are more similar to here than SC...it is weird like that...except coastal NC...that's more like SC....anyway

your gingers will be fine, curcumas can be a little hesitant. I remember DebinSC waiting a really long time for her curcumas to come up...somewhere on this thread:

ok... thanks... good to know

Georgetown, SC(Zone 8a)

diehrd: Just came across this thread. All my hedy's are up and the alpinias, but none of the curcuma's are showing anything yet. I was kind of thinking the alismatifolia would come up earlier than the others, but nothing yet.
Deb

Bluffton, SC(Zone 9a)

none of my hedy's are up..... how about costus???

Clemmons, NC(Zone 7b)

I've only got one hedy, Kewense, that's peeking out. I don't expect anything from my curcumas until June, here (Deb, I think that was when mine came up last year, about the same time as most of the sweeter taros)...in the GH even I only have one out of several that is barely starting to break dormancy. I was too chicken to leave out any costus here, but I wouldn't worry yet diehrd....spring doesn't technically start for another week or so :)

TabacVille, NC(Zone 7a)

Just don't uncover your winter protection for those gingers till much, much later...preferably mid-April.
Check this out Kara, Deb and DHS...

That's a great link...I was going to wait until tax day, but it looks like another week wouldn't hurt. Actually now what I've started doing is pulling back the mulch during the day to dry it out, then recovering by the end of the afternoon. on the curcumas especially and anything welse that really wants a dry winter. I'm only doing this once per plant, but so far it looks like all the curcumas will come back, they seem fine..but I can't seem to find that emperor....

Georgetown, SC(Zone 8a)

Mine are easily re-covered if there's a frost coming. :)
I think the "official" last frost date for down this way is March 31st...but of course, we all remember last year.
Deb

Bluffton, SC(Zone 9a)

sigh ok..... well our last frost date was 8 days ago so maybe by the beginning of april they will be out
i think the last frost date for Charleston is march 11, and i'm south of there so maytbe earlier...???

Patience, young padewan...or however it's spelled. :)

Clemmons, NC(Zone 7b)

lol...diehrd...don't give up until June, don't get excited until May..ok? curcumas do emerge later :)

Bluffton, SC(Zone 9a)

lol ok... oh and i met Deanna aka rednyr... she's sooo nice

Clemmons, NC(Zone 7b)

good for you! we have to meet up soon and exchange plants, we've talked on the phone though, very nice lady

TabacVille, NC(Zone 7a)

~and any voodoo dance around them hoping to make them come up faster..will only scare them. More constant warm days, the curcumas will emerge, so will the galangals. Some hedys peeking out, look out Kara!

Clemmons, NC(Zone 7b)

It is getting really exciting, I think the shampoo gingers made it (just not sure how big they'll get next year). I lost several globbas in the GH...I love them but I think they're a little too delicate for me

Bluffton, SC(Zone 9a)

yeah shes a very fun person. now some hedychinum coronarioms and shell gingers are coming out.... now for the zingiber, costus and urcuma, which i am trying to forget about for a month or two so i wont feel like i need to dig them up to check on them

Chickenville, FL(Zone 9a)

I am glad the 'ginger chat' is starting up again. I hope everyone's ginger comes out of dormancy soon so I can start learning more about them again :)) Its been quiet on this forum lately.

Clemmons, NC(Zone 7b)

lol....in the upper zones I know I couldn't say much about gingers this winter..."Hey, guess which globba rotted in the GH this week! " ...."oops, forgot to water the dormant ones in the basement, there went a couple more."

TabacVille, NC(Zone 7a)

Hiya Lenette! Got my Stokes catalogue yesterday, and its' about that time to get some ginger and banana fertilizers.
Hmmm..they're selling your stromanthe 'TrioStar' for $32.95!!

Chickenville, FL(Zone 9a)

I haven't been able to pull up stokes on my browser for awhile now. I was wondering if that nursery was closed now or something?
I might be sending the stromanthe on to you because I don't know if it will make it through the summer here if it needs its soil to stay damp..... It has done well so far and has even grown a little but its gonna get a lot hotter and drier lol.

TabacVille, NC(Zone 7a)

Hang on to it for a while. I have the same problem with Stokes' website.
BTW, your plumies are sent off today.

Chickenville, FL(Zone 9a)

sending you a dmail :)
