That is a bloom of an Amorphophallus 'Konjac'.

Thanks LariAnn!

Kimarj, that is one cool plant, all I can say is that the foliage is worth it.

(Kim) Philadelphi, PA(Zone 6a)

The leaves were gone :(

Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

The bloom emerges before the leaves I think. :~)

Miami, FL(Zone 10a)

That is correct; usually the bloom comes first, and often in the years that a bloom comes out, there is no leaf. I have a different species of Amorphophallus; it bloomed in 2007 and had no leaf that year. One other had a leaf, but no bloom, last year.

(Kim) Philadelphi, PA(Zone 6a)

Oh I did not know that!
Thanks :)

inside the konjac when it was at its smellest ( I could still smell it in my sleep that night - and the plant was outside. I just couldn't get the smell out of my system ! It permeated me after taking about 20 photos of it.)

OH Libby! It's GORGEOUS! Mine has been in the basment all winter, it's been working on the bloom for 3 or 4 weeks... I think it will be this biggest, ever for me. Here it was last weekend, the tip of the bud is over 6 ft tall. I expect to start smelling the stench, anytime. Amorphs are such unique, easy care, tropicalesque plants.

I would love to obtain different ones. Gotta any ideas where I can get more that will survive being in the ground in zone 7b ?

Tony Avent at Plant Delights has a very nice selection, some are a bit pricey, but most are reasonable.. all aren't hardy for me, but he may have some for 7b... plantdelightsnursery.com (I think).. I want more, but I want more of a lot of plants and bulbs, so I'm content with the few different ones I've added to my collection. I bought atroviridis from him. It will be it's 2nd growing season with me and it's more than doubled in size, it still hasn't bloomed. DG's bwilliams has some in the ground in Louisville. You could dmail and ask, he has more than Konjac "planted" I think... don't envy you the move..but you sure have a pretty voodoobloom. Kim, your second pic reminds me of Harry Potter, COOL! Nice find!

AuntB that bloom was a the flower show...folks were lining up to stick there sniffer in... I was cracking up ; } he he he !

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

Sure hope they didn't touch their nose to it...lol ;) Mine is starting to unfurl,,,,sure hope the weather warms up a bit.. I'll need to put it OUTSIDE in a couple days. The stench only lasts a few days, it's technique of calling pollinators.. Kim you had me going, it is a beautiful setting, the morph seems like it's trying to fit in..

are you going to let it bloom before potting it up? :Looks like a mighty big un !!!

(Kim) Philadelphi, PA(Zone 6a)

GINORMOUS!!!! : }

Pontotoc, MS(Zone 7b)

keep up updated on the progress ! My bloom has now "melted" :-(

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

Mine bloom is just starting to pop open, I took this a couple days ago, it's almost 7 ft tall.. (don't mind the clutter, that's where it spent winter). So fireants like amorph bulbs? I'd never thought. I would try using diametrious earth mixed in with the dirt around the bulb.

Caddo Mills, TX(Zone 8a)

I just bought 2 bulbs at Menards. Should I pot them or let them bloom first? How big of a pot should I use?

I agree ! One night I even went to bed and swore I could still smell it - and mine was never inside my house. I just felt like I needed to irrigate my nose!
