Blooms for 3-10-08

Nederland, TX(Zone 9a)

Just have a few for today. Bunches in the GH but getting to them is not going to happen. I have enough room to stand and look at the door. Put them all in on Thursday and just too lazy to take them out right now especially with the weather so nasty. Needless to say here are a handful that I could reach.

1st up is a massive 10" cup & saucer double "Dancing Fire" Just Awesome. It's hard to capture the beauty in a pic.

Just to give a idea of the size of "Dancing Fire" I did a side by side Pic with "Moonfire" which is a 5" bloom. They look alot alike in color but totally different texture.

Robert, I love Dancing Fire! I'm going to have to go back through my emails and see if I ordered it from anyone yet!

San Bernardino, CA(Zone 8b)

Wow Robert, those are ALL beautiful! That Dancing Fire definitely has my name on it - bright and gaudy, just the way I like 'em. Or, maybe it's the "fire" in the name, since I do have red hair and am a Sagittarius (fire sign), lol ;-) Starland, and well, all the rest are great too :-)

I have two blooms to add today, hurray!!!! Here's Fantasy Charm.

I can't wait for my bluebook. Understand about the weather. My Irish Spring bloomed as a gorgeous brown today. Will upload pic tomorrow.
Weather starting to get back to normal, but if this proved anything, it proved that I will have to take all my 190 pots in, if we were to have winds over 60mph.
Karen,
Thank goodness you are finally posting your babies again. I missed seeing them!
PS...both fires are beautiful. But wallet says, that until Bush sends us those tax relief checks, no can do anymore for right now :(

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 9a)

LOL, I don't think I could even afford to fertilize 190!

WOW, I really want to see your place when they are all in bloom, it will be the neighborhood showplace.

DH teases me and says I have to sell some to make room before I bring any more in. Sell one of my babies???? What is he thinking???

San Bernardino, CA(Zone 8b)

LOL, Ardesia - my husband used to say that too - of course, I'm separated now hahaha ;-)

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 9a)

Well, we have been putting up with each others eccentricities for 43 1/2 years, :-)))

He buys expensive cars and TVs so I get to buy plants (lots of them.) It works for us and it is fun teasing each other about it.

Nederland, TX(Zone 9a)

Hi Karen,

Beautiful Blooms!!! And I agree with Cat, Great to see you posting again!!!
BTW-how big did your Fantasy Charm get when it bloomed?

San Bernardino, CA(Zone 8b)

That's awesome, Ardesia, in all seriousness, I've got a great amount of respect for any couple together that long!!

Thanks Robert, well I didn't measure it but it had to be at least 6-7". Most of my hibiscus are not in very good shape right now (they're starting to green up though), but this week and next week, they're going to be cut (frozen parts), bug-sprayed and fertilized - I got them all out of the house yesterday, not arranged yet (my new rental doesn't have a ton of sunny places, uh oh). I've got to figure out where I'm going to put, well less than Cat, but definitely 150+ potted hibiscus.

Two of my friends and I are going to start an online business, so I've been busy writing content for that :-) I need to do something quick to make some money from the bubble, or not only will I be unable to afford plants (OH NO!!!!!!), but I'll have to move to a smaller place. We're hoping the business will do the trick :-) Plus, I'm working on my disability insurance appeal...Recommendation: don't ever get a rare, life-long disease...

Here's to a bloomin' beautiful spring :-)

Thanks for posting images, folks. Robert, I want to call their attention to something. The mini Moonfire was hybridized by Roz Merritt, past president of AHS, and grows and blooms well on an excellent plant. DAncing Fire is a truly spectacular bloom bred in Florida and would have been hibiscus of the year BUT didn't finish in the top ten or so because the plant is so floppy and droopy. Let the buyer beware. I know, I know . . with a bloom that beautiful you don't really care how seldom it blooms or how bad the plant is . . but we who breed them DO.
;-)
Here's another tribute to Dancing Fire the BLOOM.

Thanks for the info, Barry!! I'm always interested in those points on my hibs since I plant them in the ground and want them to look spectacular even when they're not in bloom. I really appreciate it!

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

Here's yesterday's beautifully colored Area 51, which Robert sells or will be selling.

Welcome you are, Amanda.

Yes, I love it!!

By the way, I'm interested in joining the Space City Hibiscus Society. Robert reminded me of it when I saw him and his wife (?) this past weekend. Can you tell me how and where to join?

Nederland, TX(Zone 9a)

Hi Barry and Amanda,

Barry I have to agree on the bush. The blooms are beautiful though. The blooms are massive and heavy. My plant is upright until a bloom opens. I staked it so it does not flop over. This is 1 that I only have in my collection. Area 51 always a beauty and Avant Garden also a beauty!

Amanda,

Here are links to Space city & lonestar. Hope they help.

Wow, Barry, Avant Garden is gorgeous indeed!!

Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

Barry,
Love them both. Will Robert or Matt being carrying either one?

Alvin, TX(Zone 9a)

Thanks, Robert! How do I join the Space City one?

Nederland, TX(Zone 9a)

Hey Amanda,

The membership info should be on the website. Also, look to see when the 1st show is and you can join on that sunday. I am not sure who is in charge of memberships but either way it should say on the site.

Take Care,
Robert

Waaaaaa, I want to move to Texas where people obviously speak hibiscus. Not only one but TWO hibiscus societies???? I am envious.

Alvin, TX(Zone 9a)

Great, thanks!

Sorry, didn't mean to hijack the thread. Back to talking about beautiful hibiscus!

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

Ardesia, your island is a prestige address and quite beautiful I'm sure. Here on the Texas coastal plain we have the brown sand and brown water of Galveston . . and every subtropical insect and pestilence you can name. Of course we also have roses and hibiscus blooming ten months or more . . most years. And there is a half acre lots for sale just down the street from us . .
;-)
Amanda, I'll send you a SC contact via normal email. Cat, Robert will sell A51; Avant Garden will be offered to Hines and if rejected, . . who knows?

Here's an unusual 9" da Vinci from a warm greenhouse yesterday. 7" and fully overlapped and big shoulders is more typical of the variety. Matt has rights to this one..

Oooh, pretty! Ok, thanks Barry, I'l be looking for your email.

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 9a)

LOL Barry, the TX coast has nothing on SC when it comes to bad soil and pests. The one (sort of) good thing is that the major development going on has displaced most of the venomous snakes. As I look at mile after mile of new homes I wish we had the snakes instead. The development has not scared off the hoards of mosquitoes and triple digit humidity however.
As to the soil, I garden in old marsh muck, not unlike the caliche in parts of TX; it just doesn't drain. That's why my favorite hibiscus stay in big pots.
Area 51, Avant Garden and daVinci are all drop dead gorgeous.
